Children's Hospital serves as a regional resource for southwestern Ontario children requiring paediatric specialized care. While much of this care does and should occur in ambulatory settings as close to home as possible, from time to time, children may require hospitalization within the inpatient units of CH. Research has shown paediatric hospitalization rates are impacted by a variety of factors including the incidence and prevalence of disease, child poverty, hospital bed accessibility, geographical factors, physician availability, physician practice style and community resources including the presence of alternative home/community care models for children with chronic illnesses.
Over the past decade, similar to other Ontario paediatric academic hospitals, CH's medical staff have responded to the changing needs of children requiring inpatient care by developing novel, clinical services, some integrated with University of Western Ontario teaching programs and supported by medical students and paediatric residents while others have relied on expanded role nursing support. In 2000, an Intermediate Care Service was established with clinical nurse specialist support to provide consistent inpatient care to a selected group of children, expected to stay a prolonged period in the hospital and be dependent upon medical technology on discharge.
