The Paediatric Endocrinology/Diabetes team provides care for children
and adolescents with diabetes and other endocrine disorders in southwestern
Ontario. Located at Children's Hospital (CH), the program also encompasses common childhood
problems such as disorders of growth and puberty and thyroid disease as
well as complex endocrine conditions affecting the adrenal and pituitary
glands. Overlap with other subspecialties, particularly oncology, neurology
and genetics is also common.
The multidisciplinary approach provides support both locally at CH and
regionally through outreach clinics.

- 40% of the paediatric endocrine population is comprised of children
and adolescents with diabetes, most of whom have type 1 (insulin dependent)
diabetes
- Type I diabetes patients require daily insulin by multiple injections
or pump for survival
- 24 hour access to expert medical advice is available with the following
benefits:
- Reduces unnecessary hospital admission
- Telephone advice may facilitate hospital admission and reduce morbidity
- Telephone advice to physician colleagues may reduce need for patients
to travel to CH for care
- Consultation provided to University Campus, South Street Campus,
St. Joseph's Health Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Child and
Parent Resource Institute (CPRI)
- CH is a designated growth centre providing care for children
and adolescents with growth disorders in Southwestern Ontario through
the growth clinics at CH and a satellite outreach clinic at Windsor
Regional Hospital Metropolitan
- Ongoing research studies in diabetes, obesity, growth and osteoporosis,
in collaboration with local investigators through national, international
and multi-centre trials
