Dedicated to the emergency care of children, the Children's Hospital, the Paediatric Emergency Department is the only designated Paediatric ED between Toronto's HSC and Winnipeg's Children's Hospital. It is one of three provincially recognized ED's in Ontario with an annual volume of 39,000 patient visits. It is the only Paediatric Trauma Centre in southwestern Ontario. The CH Paediatric ED is part of the London Health Sciences hospital complex. The facility was opened in 2000 and is one of three emergency departments within the Emergency Care Program at LHSC.
The Paediatric Emergency is located at Victoria Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. The adult and paediatric emergency departments share a common entrance and some facilities but have separate areas for the care of their respective populations.
These include a paediatric area for the care of critically ill and injured patients, intermediated care area and an ambulatory care area for the care of minor illness and injury. There is a traumex x-ray facility in the critical care/resuscitation area, and both departments are immediately adjacent to the main radiology facilities (CT, Ultrasound, MRI). Dedicated elevators are available to move patients to the Intensive Care Units and/or the Operating Suite.
Comprehensive emergency care for children from birth through adolescence is provided by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapist, child life specialists and social workers; all specifically trained in the care of children.
The Children's Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department offers an accredited Fellowship Program in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. The faculty are involved in numerous academic research and teaching activities.
