Education
The department of Paediatrics delivers excellent education programs for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees from a variety of specialty disciplines. In addition to didactic and clinical teaching within the curriculum, department members have contributed significantly to undergraduate course design, teaching methodologies, curriculum development and evaluation through to the clerkship years. Paediatrics at the UWO offers fellowship programs in Neonatology, Paediatric Critical Care Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. There are a number of international residents in these programs 6 of whom are sponsored by the Gulf States through an agreement with the UWO.
Children's Hospital (CH) is the geographic site of offices for the majority of academic paediatric specialists appointed to the Departments of Paediatrics, surgery, Ophthalmology, Clinical Neurosciences and Otolaryngology within the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry (SSMD) at the UWO It is also the primary site of child health care professional education in southwestern Ontario.
Research
The research productivity of the Department of Paediatrics is closely aligned with the existing themes of research strength within the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, (SSMD), UWO. These themes include maternal and newborn child and family health and development, transplantation, immunology, diabetes and infectious disease and emerging platform technologies in clinical trials and Translational research including health services and population research, proteomics and genomics. The majority of paediatric subspecialists at CH are also members of the Children's Health Research Institute (CHRI). The CHRI is led by Dr. Victor Han, a tier one Canada Research Chair and Associate Dean Research UWO.
The Section of Basic Science consists of scientists who have their academic home in the Department of Paediatrics.
