The University of Western Ontario, Department of Paediatrics supports
a vibrant and competitive residency training program in General Paediatrics.
We are one of the largest training programs in Canada with 6 Ministry of
Health funded PGY-1 positions annually. In addition we accept 1 or 2 International
Medical Graduates each year into our residency program.
We are proud of our training program and believe that our uniqueness offers
resident candidates numerous advantages. Our large referral base ensures
that residents will be exposed to an adequate depth and breath of clinical
material over the core years of the program. We are also very proud of our
senior subspecialty trainees at the fellowship level. These relationships
provide a direct, personal, and immensely rewarding relationship between
faculty and residents.
There are many opportunities to become involved as a resident through the teaching program but more importantly at the bedside and in the clinic. The success of the teaching program at UWO is evident by the many positive comments received from residents about the tremendous value received by this type of learning environment. Many qualified candidates select UWO for their paediatric education based on this philosophy of learning.
A new initiative at UWO, the Southwest Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) is a funded program that seeks to increase the opportunities for paediatric education within a variety of clinical settings outside the University campus. UWO has a strong network of clinical teachers in the region, many who are consistently rated by residents.
UWO graduates are successful at National examinations and approximately 50% go to competitive fellowships in both clinical and research subspecialty domains.
