22nd Annual Ioannides Address
David Gilman Romano, noted American classicist at the University of Pennsylvania will give the International Centre for Olympic Studies’ 22nd Annual Ion P. Ioannides Address on Friday afternoon, October 24th, at 3:30 P.M. , in Room 11 of the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building. Dr. Romano’s Ioannides address, “True Heroes and Dishonorable Victors at Olympia,” extends his career-long interest in, and extensive scholarship on, the ancient Olympic Games. The author of scores of scholarly works, including monographs, journal articles and reviews, Romano is currently Adjunct Professor of Classical Studies and Senior Research Scientist in the Mediterranean Section of the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology, where he is Director of the Corinth Computer Project and the Mount Lykaion Excavation Survey Project. Dr. Romano holds degrees from Washington University of St. Louis (A.B.-1969), the University of Oregon (M.A.-1972), and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D.-1981). He returns to Western’s campus which he visited for the first time in 1974 when he presented his first professional research paper on the theme of the Olympic Games in antiquity. A reception in ICOS (Labatt Health Sciences Bldg.—Room317) will follow Dr. Romano’s address. The university community and general public are invited.
The Ioannides Address was established in 1986 and has been held once annually ever since. The address marks a memorial to Ion P. Ioannides, a man who distinguished himself in World War II as a noted Greek guerilla hero during the German and Italian occupation of Greece. Ironically, while achieving a Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg in the late 1930s, he was a student of Germany’s Carl Diem, the inventor/creator of the now world famous Olympic Torch Relay for the 1936 Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Winter) and Berlin (Summer). Following the war, Ioannides rose in Greek education circles to become Deputy Minister of Physical Education, championing Olympic-type sports in elementary and high school physical education curricula. Prof. Ioannides, who died in 1984, taught summer courses at Western in the 1970s, helping to conduct field experiences in Greece and Turkey for Western sport history students.
