It is crucial to fit children as soon as possible with the sensory device that will maximize the= ir ability to recognize speech and other sounds in everyday life. Some children with severe to profound losses may be able to benefit from the advances in technology offered by DSP hearing aids with WDRC while others may receive m= ore benefit from the cochlear implant. Cochlear implant candidacy guidelines, p= lus the importance of optimizing the fitting of cochlear implants and hearing a= ids to provide audibility of speech for a range of input levels, will be discus= sed.
