Student Jason Mile recognized as "Highly Commended" entrant in The Undergraduate Awards

August 19, 2016 - Jason Mile, current BMus (Composition) student, has been recognized by The Undergraduate Awards (UA) as a "Highly Commended" entrant in this year’s awards. His submission, entitled "An Analysis of Les Yeux Clos II by Toru Takemitsu”, was supervised by John Cuciurean for Music 3650B Theory VI (2015-16).

Jason is co-Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian undergraduate journal of musicology, Nota Bene. Led by undergraduate students at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, it seeks to publish essays of a high critical and rhetorical standard, written by undergraduate students from universities around the world.

For the second year in a row, students in the Music Research Composition Department at Western have been honoured by UA. Recent graduate Becky Shaw, BMus (Music History) '16, was honoured for her work and made the trip to the UA Global Summit in Dublin, Ireland last November. Becky's paper, coincidentally focusing on the music of Takemitsu, was also supervised by John Cuciurean for Music 3650B Theory VI (2014-15). She also served as co-Editor-in-Chief of the Nota Bene.

The Undergraduate Awards recognized 34 papers by 31 Western students as Highly Commended Entrants. The students were selected from an entrant pool of more than 5,000 submissions from undergraduates studying at more than 250 universities across 39 countries.

Through a blinded judging process in which manuscripts are adjudicated by panels of academics, papers are recognized as Highly Commended if they finish in the top 10 per cent of their subject category. Winners will be chosen from this list later this fall.

Please join the Music Faculty in congratulating Jason on this exceptional international recognition.
