Admission Requirements
MA in Music Theory
- A Bachelor of Music in Music Theory or its equivalent (including courses in harmony, counterpoint and analysis of tonal and post-tonal works)
- Submission of recent work in counterpoint and analysis
- Submission of a recent research paper as a writing sample
- A statement of goals and research interests
MA in Musicology
- A Bachelor of Music in Music History, Bachelor of Arts with Honours Music, or equivalent
- Demonstrated knowledge of bibliographical and research techniques
- Submission of 1-2 recently written research papers
- A statement of goals and research interests
MMus in Composition
- A Bachelor of Music in Composition or its equivalent, including three years of composition study
- Submission of recent original scores (and recordings where possible)
- Submission of recent work in analysis, and counterpoint (if studied previously) or orchestration
- A statement of interest
MMus Music Education
- A Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Bachelor of Education degree
- Two years of successful music teaching experience (or equivalent experience)
- Submission of two recent writing samples
- A statement of goals and research interests
MMus in Literature and Performance
- A Bachelor of Music in Performance or its equivalent, including related literature and pedagogy courses
- An indication of exceptional ability and potential through the audition comparable to an A standard of the final undergraduate year
- A successful audition (see MMus Audition Requirments by Instrument)
PhD in Music
Candidates for the program typically come from a variety of backgrounds: Music Theory, Musicology, Composition or Music Education. Each student’s Advisory Committee (or Faculty Advisor for PhD students in Music Education) will approve his or her course of study.
- A Master’s degree, typically in Music Theory, Musicology, Composition or Music Education
- Evidence of previous research and writing
- A statement of goals and research interests
DMA in Performance
- A Master’s degree in Performance or its equivalent
- A successful audition and interview
