John Phillips is a graduate of Western University where he received his undergraduate degrees in both music and education. He pursued graduate degrees at Boston University and York University and holds an Artist Diploma in trumpet performance from the Western Conservatory of Music.
Prior to teaching at Western, Phillips was an instructor at the University of Toronto and York University in the faculties of music and education. Before leaving the public education system, he acquired extensive music teaching experience in elementary and secondary schools in the London, Scarborough and York Region District School Boards.
Working at the Ministry of Education, Phillips was responsible for the review, revision and implementation of the Arts curriculum for Ontario. He also served as principal and instructor of the in-service music teacher training programs at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
Mr. Phillips has published articles in the Ontario Music Educators' Association journal, The Recorder, the Canadian Music Educators' Association Journal, the Ontario Band Association newsletter In Harmony, and the Ontario College of Teachers journal, Professionally Speaking. He contributed a composition analysis for volume eight of the highly acclaimed series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, published by GIA.
