The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is pleased to announce the official launch of a new website http://diggingontario.uwo.ca to help you explore southern Ontario's rich cultural history stretching back over 12,000 years. Discover, Uncover, and Recover through Archaeology!
The website will take you through the four time periods defined by archaeologists, Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland and Historic. Discover the beautiful stone tools of the early Paleo and Archaic period of hunters and gatherers. Uncover fascinating information about the introduction of pottery, agriculture and village life during the Woodland period. Recover data concerning the significant changes brought about by European contact with First Nations in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the continuing First Nations adaptations through to the present day, and the sequence of historical events of European-born settlers and their descendants in southern Ontario.
This project, a joint effort of the Museum of Ontario Archaeology, London Chapter of the Ontario Archaeology Society, and Faculty of Social Science, University of Western Ontario, was made possible with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canadian Culture Online Strategy.
Available in both English and French, the site offers valuable learning and research tools: a detailed chronological time line; descriptions of each of the major time periods, including data on daily life during each time period in terms of the environmental setting, food consumed and artifacts used; representative archaeological sites; an Image Gallery displaying artifacts and graphics portraying lifestyles for each time period; an overview of how this Website can be used to link with various Ontario school curriculum requirements; and a Glossary of Archaeological Terms.
