German Program at Western

NEW GERMAN PROGRAMS PLANNED

We are in the process of submitting new German programs and new German courses to the University Senate for approval. The programs and courses are to begin in September 2013. Transfer into the new programs will be easy. Please check out our plans here!

In the meantime the following programs are open for enrollment:

HONORS SPECIALIZATION IN GERMAN
This program will allow you not only to become proficient in one of the most important languages of the European Union but also to acquire an understanding of its culture, its history and its literature.

Language instruction at all levels takes as its background current social, political, economic and cultural trends. We offer specialized translation and conversation courses besides courses about the literature and culture of different periods (Literature and Culture of the Middle Ages; Literature and Culture of German Classicism and Romanticism; Twentieth-Century German Literature and Culture; among others). Courses that focus on cities such as Berlin and Vienna allow students to study the history, literature, architecture and art of cities in which figures such as Bach, Goethe, Mozart, Brecht, Kafka and Benjamin lived and worked.

The Honors Specialization prepares you for graduate studies and research on German Language and Culture. It will also prepare you for careers related to the European Union, including business and banking.

Specialization in German
This module is similar to the Honors specialization and is suitable to students who have the same interests in German but are unable to maintain the required 70% average in the relevant courses.

Major in German
The Major in German provides excellent training in the German language and culture. You will learn German through languages courses, translation, and conversation courses. You will also acquire grounding in our culture, including the arts, literature, and film. The Major differs from the Honors Specialization and Specialization mainly in that the student takes fewer upper level courses. This module is ideal for students taking a double major who are interested in careers related to international relations, communication, or business in Europe.

Minor in GErman
With a Minor you will be able to acquire a thorough grounding the German language combined with a taste of the richness of German society. It is a program that will add value to any degree, be that in Music, Science, Business or Comparative Literature and Culture.

CERTIFICATE IN PRACTIAL GERMAN
Develop a proficiency in German and complement your major in another subject! The certificate, open to all undergraduate students, strengthens applications of a student who intends to pursue careers or graduate study in areas where German is useful.
