M.A. Program Requirements - Hispanic Studies
Course
Requirements
The
Hispanic Studies M.A. is a two-year program.
- All
students must complete 7 half-courses.
- All
students must take the Seminar on Transatlantic Studies (one half-course)
and the Seminar on Information Systems and Research Methods (one
half-course).
- Students
will choose between two areas of concentration: 1) Literature; 2)
Language and Linguistics. In order to fulfill the program requirements,
students will take 4 half-courses in their designated area and 1
more half course from any area or graduate program.
- All
students must choose their courses in conjunction with the Graduate
Chair, who will approve all course selections.
- Due
to the importance given, by Doctoral programs, to a wide knowledge
in literary history and to a deep understanding of various periods
and genres, students in the area of Literature are strongly encouraged
to take one half-course in each of the following periods: Medieval,
Golden Age, Modern, and Latin-American.
With
the approval of the Graduate Chair, students may complete the M.A. program
by taking 10 half-courses over two years, instead of writing a thesis.

Program Requirement
International students whose first language is not English must provide
evidence of their proficiency in English in order to graduate successfully
from the program. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score
of 213 or better is required for graduation.

Theses
and Thesis Supervision
Students
who write a Master's thesis choose a subject of interest in consultation
with their supervisor. In accordance with University regulations for
graduate supervision, each student will have a Supervisor and a Second
Reader, both members of the Graduate Faculty in Hispanic Studies. The
student should decide by the end of the first term of the first year
in residence whether to write a thesis, or pursue a non-thesis M.A.
By the end of the second term, students who pursue the thesis option
complete a 5-10 page proposal for the thesis, including bibliography.
