Phillips 410 electron microscope

The Transmission Electron Microscopy facility is operated jointly between the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (for research services) and the Department of Pathology (for clinical services). For research, the facility is operated on a cost recovery basis with full technical support, available on a contract basis. The Philips EM 410 is equipped with high resolution film output (either 35 mm or plate film). The facility provides materials for negative staining and thin sectioning techniques of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, as well as immunoelectron microscopy. Specimen preparation equipment includes embedding chemicals and equipment, ultramicrotomes, and a carbon-coater for electron microscopy grids. A fully-operational darkroom for developing of film and printing of electron micrographs from negatives is also available.

User Policy:
A user is an individual who wishes to make use of the electron microscope either with or without the services of a technician. Initially, all users who wish to use the electron microscope themselves will be required to operate the microscope under the supervision of the technician (or facility manager) in charge. The period of supervision will be determined by the facility manager with the agreement of the user. It is imperative that users have a thorough understanding of the operation of the equipment because unsupervised users are responsible for all damage done to this equipment.

Facility Manager:
Dr. S.F. Koval, Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Email: skoval@uwo.ca
Tel: 519-661-3439

Location:
The electron microscope is in the Dental Science Building room 3001. The technical support suite is in the Dental Science Building room 3000.

Fee Structure:
Investigators must provide a UWO account number prior to beginning the project.
Project Start-Up Fee: $250.00 (includes consultation)
This covers consumable items required for the preparation of samples, excluding formvar-coated copper grids, specific antibodies or colloidal gold preparations. If a large number of consumable items are required, an additional fee will be charged.

EM 410 Beam Time: $30.00 per filament hour

Technician Fee: charged weekly at $27.00 per hour
This fee covers sample preparation, time on the electron microscope and printing of electron micrographs

Darkroom Services: $1.00 per sheet of photographic paper (5 x 7)
This fee covers the cost of paper and chemicals, but not labour.

Effective: April 2011
