Messages from the Graduate Chair
July 18, 2012
Mitacs is offering a total of 50 Globalink Graduate Fellowships this year for the 2012 Globalink program participants. Each full partner university has access to three Globalink fellowships effective immediately. Our hopes are that the student supervisors are able to attract the students back for graduate studies by discussing the fellowships while the students are still in Canada. Effective November 30 2012, any unused Fellowships will be pooled and distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis to universities who need more than three.
There are a limited number of fellowships available which means that when we are advising the professors at your university about the fellowships, we will ask them to coordinate their requests through your office. As you know, there will be an additional 75 students from China arriving in Canada as part of the Globalink program during the month of July, and they will also be eligible for the fellowships.
The Globalink program will be running a webinar for students in the 2012 Globalink program this summer, bringing them up to date on how the fellowships work, and on the fact that the fellowships are available for our full partner Canadian universities to use. (We will run a second webinar in early September for the China students)
Shortly afterwards, we intend to distribute the attached description of the Fellowships being offered to students and professors, and will be posting this information on our Globalink Fellowships Application webpage. http://www.mitacs.ca/globalink/globalink-graduate-fellowship
When the information is posted online, we would like to provide the students with a link to information about graduate studies at the university. If you have a specific document or link that you would like us to include, please forward to my attention by Friday July 20, 2012. If there is no particular information or link, we will use the university homepage as a landing spot.
As always, please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions.

I want to draw your attention to the recently announced Dean’s PhD graduate stipend and Dean’s MSc to PhD transfer stipend awards. These applications are now available and are due September 1:
The Dean’s PhD graduate stipend award is open to all NEW direct entry PhD students enrolled in a program in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry between May 1 and August 31, 2012. The Dean’s MSc to PhD transfer stipend is available to all PhD students who transferred from the MSc program NO LATER THAN THEIR 5TH TERM. These applicants would have been enrolled in the MSc program in the spring but switched to the PhD program between May 1 and August 31.
Please note that only two awards of each type are being made. However, they are worth quite a bit of money as they would provide $5000.00 per year for the MSc to PhD award and $25,000.00 per year for the PhD award. These awards cannot be combined with any other award; for example an OGS or QEII award.
