Expectations: Faculty and Students

  Graduate education is a critical component of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology.  In our graduate program, our expectation is to develop a capacity for rigorous scholarship, independent critical judgment and academic honesty in each student.  Our goal is to provide a rich learning environment that attracts and retains exceptional students. Graduate trainees work closely with faculty mentors to jointly acquire and create the knowledge and tools needed to address important issues in the fields of microbiology and immunology.

Graduate Students

  Graduate students are expected to gain knowledge and expertise in their chosen area of investigation. Trainees seek to discover new knowledge by pursuing a novel topic of scholarly investigation. As scientists-in-training, graduate students are also expected to acquire the skills to communicate knowledge through oral presentation and publication. Students enjoy academic freedom and respect as junior colleagues.

Faculty Mentors

  Mentors play key roles as instructors, advisors and researchers. Faculty mentors invest their time and efforts in order to provide intellectual guidance and support for the scholarly efforts of graduate trainees.  They also assist graduate students in developing the professional research, teaching, and networking skills that are ultimately required for a career within or outside academia.  In addition, faculty are responsible for the ongoing evaluation of graduate students' performance in academic, research, and scholarly activities.
