MAJOR IN LINGUISTICS

A Major in Linguistics may be combined with other modules to make up a UWO degree. To combine with Psychology, please see Honors Linguistics and Psychology. Students choosing a Major in Linguistics require a signature from one of the Co-Directors of the Linguistics program.

Admission Requirements

First year:

A general first year program including Anthropology 1027a/b and Lingusitics 1028a/b. Students who have not taken Anthropology 1027a/b in their first year should take Linguistics 2288a/b or one of French 2800 or Spanish 3303a as their alternative introduction to linguistics. In addition Linguistics 1028a/b is a requirement for programs in Linguistics. Students are encouraged to register for a French language course at their level of competence and to continue to at least the 1020E/021 level in order to be able to take advantage in later years of linguistics offerings taught in French.

Students selecting a Major require the signature of one of the Co-Directors of the Linguistics program.

Second, Third and Fourth Years:

Six Honors Linguistics courses including:

Anthropology 2247a, 2248b, 3335F/G, 3337F/G

Two full-course equivalents from Anthropology 3237a/b, 2243F/G, 2249F/G, French 2800, 3810a/b, 3830a/b, 4820a/b, 4810a/b, 4880a/b, 4840a/b, Linguistics 2244a/b, 2287F/G, Spanish 3303a, 4406F/G, 4407F/G

Two full course equivalents from the Arts and Social Science Courses listed below under Approved Courses in Linguistics.

Some courses have prerequisites and/or antirequisites.

Either Anthropology 1027a/b or Linguistics 2288a/b is required for any of Anthropology 2247a/b, 2248a/b, 3237a/b, 2243a/b, 2249a/b, 3335F/G or 3337F/G, and French 2800 is required for French 3810a/b or 3830a/b. Some courses have additional prerequisites and/or antirequisites. French and Spanish courses taught in those languages have language (as well as other) prerequisites. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they have obtained the prerequisites or special permissions for the courses they wish to take as part of the Linguistics Minor.
