The Public Key Infrastructure at the University of Western Ontario currently uses 2
Certificate Authorities to provide secure communications for its community. The primary use
of the infrastructure is to provide secure web services using the Secure Socket Layer (ssl)
protocol.
It is also used to for ldap, mail and code signing
The first Certificate Authority UWO uses is a local authority maintained by ITS. Certificates
signed by this authority can be used to setup secure web services which are used by small
groups of local user.
The second Certificate Authority UWO uses is Thawte
Certifications which has a world wide presence and is predefined into most common web
browsers. Certificates signed by this
authority can be used to setup secure web services which are available to the greater
population of the University or the entire world.
