How Do I ... Use the Western Search Engine

Contents

How do I get to the Western Search Engine?

You can get to the Western Search Engine at http://find.uwo.ca

Which sites are indexed?

The search engine indexes the web sites listed at the "Official Web sites at UWO" (http://www.uwo.ca/official.html).

Why is my page not indexed?

Have a look at http://www.uwo.ca/official.html and see if your site is listed. If your site is not listed but is linked from one of these official sites, please contact <its-search@uwo.ca>

How do I restrict the search to my site?

You can restrict the results that a search returns to only those pages in a certain web site. Note that these pages will be a subset of the total amount of pages indexed, as described by the criteria above.

If your faculty or department has websites in more than one domain, then you will need to ask for a separate collection. Please contact <its-search@uwo.ca>

Now if your department is a just a subset of a website, you could use the following code

How do I make the indexing of my site more efficient?

When you are starting from a template, you might overlook changing

  • <title>Department Home page</title>
  • <meta name="Description" content="department home page">
  • <meta name="Keywords" content="department home page">

Most people overlooked changing the above tags to correlate with the content of the web page. Search engines award points to

  • words found in the above fields
  • the number of times a particular word is found in that web page
  • if you have an image in your page, do not use a generic non-meaningful description
    img src="../picture1.gif" alt="picture1"

The more points awarded to your page the higher ranking it will be rated. Search engines will display search results in descending order of ranking. What you need to do is to get your page as highly ranked as possible for a particular search term or a number of search terms. For example, if you want your page to be displayed as one of the top three search results when someone search for the term "radiology" you will need to incorporate this word into your title, meta description, meta keywords, your image src and alt, and, as many times as possible in the content for the page.

Note that the META tags must be placed within the HEAD portion of your web page.

Examples of Meta Tags

<meta name="description" content=" The Department of Medicine is offering a graduate and post graduate program in Radiology. The Department of Medicine is world renowned for its research in Radiology. A number of the faculty have SIR foundation grants totalling two million dollars. Research is being conducted in magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. We have leading scientists in the fields of spinal cord injury, interventional neuroradiology, cardiac magnetic resonance spectroscopy, tumor physiology and positron emission tomography. ">

<meta name="keywords" content=" radiology, magnetic resonance, imaging, MRI, spectroscopy, spinal cord, spinal, neuroradiology, cardiac, tumor, physiology, positron, tomography ">
