1 Introduction

This document provides a brief overview of Netscape Communicator. It assumes that you have downloaded and installed Netscape Communicator using either the document "How Do I... Download and Install Netscape Communicator v4.6 for Windows 95" or "How Do I... Download and Install Netscape for a MAC" and "How do I... Use Netscape Communicator 4.6 Part 1 - Configuration" both available on-line at http://www.uwo.ca/its/doc/hdi/. For more help, Communicator provides a manual with the program. Click on the "Help" command when running Netscape Communicator and select "Help Contents" or press the F1 key at any time when using Communicator.

2 The Interface

Note: The Components of Netscape have "hotkeys" that allow the associated application to start. (i.e. Holding down the CTRL (Control) key while pressing the number 2 on you keyboard will start "Messenger")

Netscape Communicator is really several programs or components in one. Each of these components is accessible through the menu option labelled "Communicator" or through the quick toolbar either floating or at the bottom right hand corner of any Netscape Communicator window.

Each Communicator component has similar features that make navigating between them easier.

2.1 The Menu

Each component has a menu at the top that contains commands relevant to both the entire Netscape Communicator package and each component. Certain menu commands will change when you are using different components, as each component is slightly different.

2.2 Toolbars

Below the menu are one or more "toolbars".

These give the user quick access to the most common commands by acting as buttons which carry out a command when clicked on once. To hide a toolbar click on the "hide" button on the far left denoted by a small triangle.  If you hold the mouse over an icon a brief description regarding the icon will be displayed.
