1 Introduction

This document describes how to use WS_FTP, provided as part of the UWONet package, to download and install the 32-bit Netscape Communicator (Netscape v4.6) distribution provided for members of the UWO community via anonymous ftp. (For more information, see How Do I . . . Register for the Internet@Home and How do I ... Get Started With WS_FTP.) The Netscape Communicator archive is customized for UWO. It includes the following settings:

3 Getting Started

NOTE: Downloading Netscape Communicator v4.6 over a modem connection is strongly discouraged. The archive is very large and could take well over 2 hours to download.

Netscape Communicator is available on the latest UWONet CD which can be purchased at the Computer Operations counter located next to the ITS Help Desk on the 2nd floor of the Support Services Building for only $5.00. It also available on diskettes from the ITS Help Desk (NSC 244). Please bring 2 boxes of diskettes (you'll need 14 diskettes for the Windows 95 version, but it's good to have a few extras).

  1. Start WS_FTP by double clicking on its icon. Check that Anonymous FTP to UWO is selected as the Profile Name in the Session Profile window presented. This is the default location in the UWONet distribution. (If this location is not currently selected, choose it from the list of profile names by first clicking on the  beside the Profile Name box, and then selecting it from the list presented.) If you don't have an entry for Anonymous FTP to UWO, please refer to How do I... Get Started with WS_FTP to create one. Once created it will look like this
NOTE: The password must be YOUR email address.
  1. With Anonymous FTP to UWO selected, click on OK to connect to this site. The next screen consists of 2 main areas: the left side showing information about your local computer and the right side showing information about the remote site (in this case, the anonymous FTP archive area on ftp.uwo.ca). Click here for a diagram of the WS_FTP Main Screen.
  2. Follow the instructions in Section 4 (below) for instructions on how to Download Netscape Communicator 4.6

4 Downloading Netscape Communicator 4.6 for Windows 95

It is recommended that you download the Netscape archive file to a temporary directory/folder (e.g. C:\TEMP on your local hard disk). Click here for a diagram of the WS_FTP Main Screen.

The following instructions assume that you are downloading the Netscape archive file to C:\TEMP.

  1. Change to the directory C:\TEMP on your local hard disk or create it if it doesn't exist. The left side of the window should now have the heading . If it doesn't look like this then click the  button. When prompted with "Enter local directory name", enter C:\TEMP. If the directory exists the heading should now be  If this is the case, skip to #2, otherwise follow the rest of the instructions in this step to create it.
  2. Find the Netscape distribution on the remote system. The full path for the distribution file is:

  3. /pub/micro/uwo_distributions/www/win95-98-NT/netscape461.exe.
The left side of the window should now have the heading .
  4. A message window will appear showing the progress of the file transfer. Once the transfer is complete, exit from WS_FTP by clicking on the button at the bottom right portion of the window.

5 Un-Installing Previous Versions of Netscape

It is very important that any previous versions of Netscape are removed from your system before you install Netscape 4.61.
If you had a previous version of Netscape installed follow the instructions below:

To uninstall previous version of Netscape

  1. Locate the file bookmark.htm and copy it to a temporary directory or a floppy disk; this is to preserve the bookmarks you have acquired.
  2. Locate your address book (in Netscape 3, the file is called address.htm) and copy it to a temporary directory or a floppy disk.
  3. Copy any local mail folders that you want to keep to a temporary directory or a floppy disk (e.g. probably in /netscape/mail).
  4. Click on your  button and select  and then . Once you are in the Control Panel window, double click on . In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, make sure the  tab is selected. From the list presented, select your old version of Netscape and click on the  button. This will then remove Netscape from your system.
  5. If the netscape directory still shows up on your hard disk after this, delete the directory.

  6.

NOTE: Once you have completed the steps below to install the new version of Netscape, you can then import your bookmark.htm file into the new Netscape. Your address book can be imported into Netscape as well. This procedure is suggested by Netscape Communications Corporation because installation of Netscape 4.6 over an existing earlier version has been known to corrupt the Windows 95 Registry.

6 Installing Netscape Communicator for Windows 95

Note: It is best to uninstall all previous versions of Netscape as stated in Section 5 before proceeding.
  1. Close down all Windows programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, etc.) before starting the installation process.
  2. Click on the  button and select . Enter c:\temp\netscape461.exe in the Open dialog box and click .
  3. The Netscape Communicator will self-extract and begin the Installation Wizard.
  4. Once up and running, double click on the Netscape Communicator icon in the Netscape group to start Netscape.
  5. If this is the first time you installed Netscape Communicator, you will be asked to create a new User Profile. This profile will hold all your personal information such as your name and e-mail address.
  6. Everything else should be configured and ready to use. Please refer to the How do I... documentation found at URL http://www.uwo.ca/its/doc/hdi/ (or use the Personal Toolbar button ).
