1 Introduction

Netscape Communicator is a network navigational tool, allowing you to access a wide variety of networked information. It can be used for electronic mail, the World Wide Web (WWW), and Usenet newsgroups. Netscape Communicator is a graphical user interface that provides transparent and seamless access to information services and sources available on the Internet.

2 Getting Started

This document assumes that you have already downloaded and installed Netscape Communicator 4.6 onto your computer. To download and install Netscape Communicator, please refer to the How do I... Download and Install Netscape Communicator v4.6 for Windows 95 or How Do I... Download and Install Netscape for a Mac (depending on your system). It is also assumed that installation of Netscape Communicator has been done according to the instructions in those documents.

3 Configuration

WINDOWS 95 ONLY NOTE: When using Windows 95 with a modem, Netscape Communicator will run without a dial-up connection established. Note that because you have not connected to the Internet you will not be able to link to any Web sites and you will receive an error message that Netscape Communicator was unable to make a network connection or the server has no DNS entry. (For more information about using Windows 95 to dial-in please see How do I...Dial-in to UWO from Windows 95)

3.1 Setting Preferences

All preferences are set in one section. In the menu at the top of Communicator click on Edit then from that menu click on Preferences. A new window should be displayed.

3.1.1 Mail & Newsgroups

The only critical settings are located in the Mail & Newsgroups section of the preferences settings. To view these preferences click on the plus sign next to the option Mail & NewsGroups. The plus sign should change to a minus sign and several other options should appear in an indented list. We are only interested in the first three preferences: Identity, Mail Servers and NewsGroup Servers listed under the Category section of the Preferences window.
Identity
Click on the Identity option under the Category section. On the right side of the "Preferences Window" several fields will be displayed. Fill them out as follows.
Your name:  Type in your full name. (First name followed by Last name)
Email address:  Type in your e-mail address listed on your user sheet provided when you signed up for your account, or sent to you with your student registration.
Reply-to-address:  Type in your e-mail address. (This can be left blank if it is the same as your e-mail address)
Organization:  Type in The University of Western Ontario
Signature File:  Using the  button you can select a text file that contains information to be appended to the end of each e-mail message you send. This is referred to as a signature. The text file must exist prior to choosing it. (This field may be left blank)

NOTE: If you have installed The University of Western Ontario custom version of Netscape Communicator (eg. From the UWONet CD or by downloading it from UWO's anonymous ftp site) the following sections should be filled in already.

Mail Servers
Click on the Mail Servers option under the Category section. On the right side of the "Preferences Window" the following window should appear. There is more information than is shown here but right now we will work with the section as it appears below.

This is how the UWO customized version of Netscape will appear.
If the window appears as it is here choose the  button.
If the Incoming Mail Server is not as listed you should choose the  button and enter imap.uwo.ca

When you click on the  button the following window should appear. Make the appropriate changes so that the "User Name" is the first part of your e-mail address. (Everything before the @ symbol. i.e. jdoe if your e-mail address is jdoe@uwo.ca)

NOTE: It is recommended that you do not use the "Remember password" option for security reasons.

Click on the  tab at the top of the Mail Server properties window shown above. Make the appropriate changes so it appears similar to the following.

NOTE: It is a good idea to click on the last option "Empty Trash on exit" to avoid quota problems with your account.

Click on the  tab at the top of the Mail Server properties window shown above. Make the appropriate changes so it appears similar to the following.

NOTE: Failing to fill in the IMAP server directory field correctly could result in numerous errors.

Click on the  button and you will be back to the Mail Server properties window and we can then continue with the set-up of the options. We are now concerned with the middle section on the right side of the Preferences Window under the heading "Outgoing Mail Server". Make the appropriate changes as shown in the following illustration.

The last thing we are concerned with in the Mail Server properties window is located at the bottom of the Preferences Window under the heading "Local mail directory". This refers to where on your personal computer you would prefer to save your e-mail if you decide to move the mail from the server at Western.

NOTE: An on campus computer can choose a network drive as the local mail directory but this is not recommended due to space limitations on the server.

If you decide to store the mail in a directory on your PC other than the default listed above, click on the  button to choose a different location. It is recommended to stay with the default as chosen by Netscape.

Newsgroups Servers
Click on the Newsgroup Servers option under the Category section. On the right side of the "Preferences Window" the following window should appear. There is more information than is shown here but right now we will work with the section as it appears below.

This is how the UWO customized version of Netscape will appear.
If the window appears as it is here choose the  button.
If the Incoming Mail Server is not as listed you should choose the  button and enter newshost.uwo.ca

If you have installed The University of Western Ontario custom version of Netscape Communicator (eg. from the UWONet CD or by downloading it from UWO's anonymous ftp site) the following window should appear when you click on the  button.

Click on the  button and you will be back to the Newsgroup Server properties window and we can then continue with the set-up of the options. We are now concerned with the middle section on the right side of the Preferences Window.

NOTE: An on campus computer can choose a network drive as the Newsgroup directory but this is not recommended due to space limitations on the server.

If you decide to store the mail in a directory on your PC other than the default listed above, click on the  button to choose a different location. It is recommended to stay with the default as chosen by Netscape.

You can leave all of the other options unchanged. They are Addressing, Messages, Window Settings, Copies and Folders, Formatting, Return receipts and Disk Space.
