Contents

Introduction

This document is intended for those who would like to switch to Netscape Messenger for their e-mail and who have been using another ITS supported e-mail application e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird. This document describes how to convert the mail folders and address books to Netscape Communicator. The following conversions are described:

Move my Mail Folders

Follow the instructions in the appropriate section to make your e-mail messages and folders available to Netscape Communicator.

From Eudora

Netscape Communicator v4.05 and higher comes with a utility to import existing Eudora mailboxes, address books and settings into Netscape Communicator. To run the conversion:
  1. Open up Netscape Messenger
  2. Click on File, then click on Import
  3. Select Eudora Mail from the menu, then click Next
  4. Follow the prompts on the screens

After the conversion:

From Netscape v3.x or v4.x

If you would like to keep your mail boxes as local folders instead of on the IMAP server (i.e. on your hard disk but accessible only from that computer), copy all the files from your Netscape v3 Mail directory into the Netscape Communicator Mail directory c:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\profilename\Mail. This assumes that you installed Netscape Communicator in the default directory given and "profilename" is the name of your profile.

When you start Netscape Messenger, you will see the mail boxes under Local Mail.

If you want to transfer the mailboxes from your hard disk to the IMAP server imap.uwo.ca, you can use one of the following methods:

Method 1:

  1. Create a new folder on imap from the Messenger's File menu (File/New Folder/ Create as sub-folder of Mail on imap.uwo.ca)
  2. Select the mail box you want to move (e.g. from Local Mail/Netscape3 Mailbox)
  3. Select all the messages in this mail box
  4. Click the File icon and choose the new folder you created on imap. The selected messages will be moved to that folder on imap.
  5. Delete the old folder in Local Mail/Netscape3 Mailbox from the Message Center
Or Method 2 (FTP):
  1. Start an FTP client program such as WS_FTP (provided with UWONet). For information about using WS_FTP, please refer to How do I... Get Started with WS_FTP
  2. Make a connection to your panther account (i.e. host name=panther.uwo.ca, userid=login name)
  3. Change your local directory to be the directory where Netscape mail is (e.g. c:\netscape\users\popname\mail where popmail is your POP server login name).
  4. Change the remote directory to "mail". If the directory "mail" does not exist on panther, create it using the NEWDIR button. (Note: Unix names are case sensitive).
  5. Select the file folder names that you want to move to the server from the local directory and transfer to the directory "mail" on panther as ASCII. The file folders are the ones without the extension .snm but with the same name. You don't need to transfer the .snm files.
  6. Exit the FTP client.

Move my Address Book

From Eudora

You can use the Netscape Communicator (v4.05 or higher) Import Utility for Eudora to import existing Eudora address books into Netscape Communicator. See section Move my Mail Folders From Eudora for details about the Utility.

After the conversion the converted address book is stored in c:\windows\desktop\nicknames.ldif. To import it into Netscape Communicator:

From Netscape 3.x or v4.x

You can import your Netscape 3.x Address Book into Netscape Communicator, via the Import option.
