Introduction

This document describes how to import your address book using some. Importing your personal address book is useful when moving to a new email program. Before importing any new entries you may want to:

  • consider exporting your current address book as a backup in case of data corruption.
  • browse the import file and existing address book for duplicate entries

Western's Webmail Interface

  1. Select Address Book tab
  2. Select Import/Export
  3. Enter the appropriate file
  4. Chose the appropriate Import Format from the drop down menu
  5. Select Import
  6. A status report will be displayed at the top of the window indicating the number of un/successful entries imported
  7. Select Close

Note - The maximum number of contacts for Western's webmail interface has been set to 5,000. This limit has been carefully chosen so as to avoid any adverse effects on the university infrastructure.

Mozilla Thunderbird

 
  1. Open your address book and go to "Tools", "Import" and click "Address Book..."
  2. Select your appropriate file type and select "Import"
  3. Select "Browse ..." and find the exported Address Book (you may have to change the "Files of type" drop down box to something different if you can't find your address book). Select "Open" to open your address book.
  4. Select "Next" 
  5. Check off the fields you wish to import. When you are ready, click "Finish"

Microsoft Outlook

 
  1. Open your Address Book and go to "File" and click "Import and Export"
  2. Select "Import from another program or file" and click "Next"
  3. Note that Microsoft Outlook does not accept Netscape's default .ldif so if you are exporting from Netscape, one should choose .csv instead of .ldif
  4. Select the appropriate file type (usually "Comma Separated Values (Windows)") and click "Next"
  5. Select "Browse ..." to find your exported address book. Choose the option for duplicates that suits your needs best
  6. Keep the destination folder as "Contacts" and select "Next" and it will be imported

Outlook Express

  1. Open your address book and go to "File", "Import" and click "Other Address Book..."
  2. Select your appropriate file type and select "Import"
  3. Select "Browse ..." and find the exported Address Book (you may have to change the "Files of type" drop down box to something different if you can't find your address book). Select "Open" to open your address book.
  4. Select "Next" 
  5. Check off the fields you wish to import. When you are ready, click "Finish"

Mac Mail

  1. Open the address book application and choose "Import" and "Text File"
  2. Select your appropriate file and select "Open" then "Ok.
