How Do I ... Dial-in to UWO from Windows Vista

Introduction

This document will walk you through setting up your UWO dial up connection in Windows Vista (all versions). Dial up is available to all staff and faculty (students can get access to this service for a fee). You are allotted 40 hours of dial up time a month. This document assumes you have already installed the drivers for your modem and it is ready to use. If you do not have your modem set up please refer to the CD or disk(s) that came with your modem.

How to Dial-in to UWO from Windows Vista

NOTE: The image below is referred to as the Windows Logo in this document. This has replaced the Start button in prior versions of Windows.

Open the Control Panel by clicking on the Windows Logo/Start Button the select Control Panel.

Double click on Network and Sharing Center.

On the left hand side, click set up a connection or network.

This will launch the connection wizard.

Under Choose a connection option, Select “Set up a dial up connection”. Click Next.

Enter the information as follows:

Dial Up Phone Number: 5196405305

Check off “Remember my password”.

User name: UWO Username

Password: UWO Password

Connection name: UWO Dial-Up

Also check off Allow other people to use this connection, if you have multiple user accounts that you would like to use this UWO Dial up connection (Needs administrative elevation). Click Create.

Windows will now try to connect to this network. You can test the connection or you can skip this step by clicking Skip. You will now see a window that says “The connection to the Internet is ready to use”. Click Close.

From the Network and Sharing Center, on the left hand side, click “Manage network connections”.

If this is your only means of connecting to the Internet make sure it is set as your default connection (if not already). Right click the UWO Dial-Up connection and select “Set as Default Connection”. You will see a green check mark on the connection.

Also, you can create a shortcut on your desktop. Right click the UWO Dial-Up connection and select “Create Shortcut”. You will be prompted with a warning “Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead”, click Yes.

You are finished! Your dial up connection is ready to be used. You can connect by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop or by going to, Windows Logo/Start -> Connect to, and selecting the UWO Dial-Up connection.
