In 2005, The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) was passed by the Ontario government. The purpose of the AODA is “to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures and premises on or before January 1, 2025, by developing, implementing and enforcing accessibility standards”. Over the past few years, Western has been working towards meeting the various deadlines that were put in place for Customer Service pieces of the legislation. In 2013, ITS and Communications & Public Affairs began working on making new sites in Cascade meet the Information and Communications pieces of the legislation. In early January, 2014 all Western websites in the new Western design in Cascade will need to be republished so that they are AODA compliant.
