Description:  Follows the story of a young girl named Tita who pines her entire life to marry her lover, Pedro, but is forbidden by her mother in order to uphold the family tradition of the youngest daughter not marrying but taking care of her mother until the day she dies. A diffident girl inhibited by tradition, Tita soon discovers that she has a magical power to express her passions through the art of cooking.

Description: Tells the story of a remote, isolated unnamed Lebanese village inhabited by both Muslims and Christians. The community lives in peace, but it is surrounded by a mine field and only reachable by a small bridge. When a civil war threatens to spill over into the community, the women of the village conspire to keep their men ignorant of the sectrarian violence. 

Japanese Film Screening: Tug of War!

Description: The city of Oita has was won the tug-of-war world championship three times. To promote the city of Oita, the mayor instructs Chiaki Nishikawa, a ordinary employee and tug-of-war enthusiast, to form a female tug-of-war team to take on the nation's top competitors! The screening is brought to you by the Film Studies department, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the Japan Foundation in Toronto, the Consulate General of Japan, and the Japanese Students Association.
