Job Related Assessments / Testing

Skills demonstration requires the candidates to demonstrate competency in a practice environment and may take many different forms. For example, candidates might be asked to conduct a meeting during which they provide performance feedback to a staff member. This example would be relevant in positions where the candidates have leadership responsibilities. Members of the interview team may participate in this kind of exercise to add interest to the activity.

Another example of skills demonstration is through the use of various documents which the incumbent deals with on a regular basis. This activity is often referred to as an in-basket test or role-play. This may include customer complaints, work flow recommendations from staff, or other matters directly related to the position. Candidates are asked to explain the course of action taken in these situations, and why.

Situational analysis is a variation of a situational interview question. This tool is often used subsequent to interviews where behavioural based and traditional questions are used effectively to narrow the candidate selection down to one or two possibilities. Situational analysis can be either verbal, perhaps used in a second interview, or in written form where the candidate is given a set amount of time to answer questions related to the competencies. Not unlike situational interview questions, situational analysis examples are developed through the use of the job profile and competency descriptors.

There are some skills, abilities and knowledge that can be effectively assessed through tests. Some examples are:

  • Computer Software
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Proofreading
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Mathematical Knowledge
  • Technical Knowledge
  • Mechanical Aptitude

It is important to be clear about what you want the test to measure. Any testing must reliably measure bonofide occupational requirements. A scoring key should be established prior to administering the test.

Thought should also be given to how the test will be administered. A reasonable time frame for completing the test should be established and consistently administered. The materials needed to complete the test should be readily available. The test should be administered in a private and quiet area that is conducive to concentration.
