You've Got Applicants
After the
competition closes, Staff Relations will forward the resumes of those candidates
who meet the initial screening criteria to the hiring supervisor for
review. For UWOSA Continuing, Sessional and Term positions,
the applications will be sorted into "internal" (i.e.
current union members) and "external" groups. For
these positions, initially, only the internal applications will
be forwarded to the hiring department. If, however, it is determined
that no internal applicants meet the minimum requirements, Staff
Relations will forward all external applications, which meet
the criteria, to the hiring supervisor for review.
Develop the Criteria for Determining
which Candidates to Short-list
Prior to reviewing any resumes, it is important to decide how to determine which candidates will be short-listed or interviewed. The best way to do this is to return to the role description and determine what kind of education and experience is necessary for success in the position. Decide on education and experience level, then develop a scoring tool to ensure that all candidates are treated consistently. Remember, it is best not to screen out candidates when a particular skill is absent: many skills are learned on the job or can be obtained through training or short courses.
Confirm qualifications needed. This is a list of must-haves, and like-to-haves that will either include, or exclude resumes (and applicants) from the process. It is important that supervisors use discretion in determining must-haves as it may preclude a candidate who would otherwise be a qualified candidate. An example of a reasonable must-have may be a post-secondary certificate or degree where an occupational or professional requirement exists (i.e. electrician, nurse). The job profile will assist in developing this list. Many skills are learned on the job, or can be obtained through short training courses. Be careful not to inflate these needs.
Think twice about requiring a number of years experience in a given role. Many organizations (i.e. public service, education sector) provide staff with invaluable experience in a short time-frame because of high workload, professional autonomy, and financial restraints on staffing. Look at the complete picture before including, or excluding an applicant.
