Employee Learning and Development

Western is committed to supporting employees to be successful in their roles.  Western’s Learning and Development Services offers large and small group learning opportunities, consultation and facilitation services to support the work of Western’s academic and administrative leaders and staff.

Learning and Development Services is part of Human Resources at Western.  Our programs and services bring together leaders and staff from across Western to learn, build community and connections, and contribute to a high-achieving, collegial workplace culture.

Note: Western faculty members and graduate students are encouraged to visit the Teaching Support Centre for programs to advance their teaching and learning practices.

Our Courses & Learning Opportunities

Introduction to Leadership at Western

Learn communication skills to effectively work with others and express your work needs in a constructive manner. Explore work style differences and how to leverage these when working in groups. This program is for Western's informal and emerging leaders and those new to a leadership role.

Western’s Foundational Leadership Skills Program

This program is for people in formal leadership roles.  Increase your ability to use best practices in leadership, strengthen your communication skills in challenging situations, and work effectively with groups.

Leadership Skills Refresher

This program is for graduates of Western’s Foundational Leadership program (Understanding Leadership and “LET”). As new challenges arise for you as leaders, take this opportunity to address them through reflection, review, and practice of your foundational leadership skills.

Meetings that Work – Skills for Meeting Leaders

For those who lead teams, projects, or committees at Western.  Learn to prepare for productive meetings, facilitate high quality participation, maintain meeting focus and momentum, and plan for action and follow-up.

Improving Professional & Personal Productivity

Learn effective planning strategies to move ‘important work’ forward, manage your daily work, and prioritize tasks. If you are in a formal leadership role, or if your role includes leadership of team projects, committees or other work groups, this course is for you.

Western Leaders’ Forum

The Leaders’ Forum is an opportunity for Western’s senior Academic and Administrative leaders to discuss issues of strategic importance to the University.  The Forum provides an opportunity for information sharing, idea exploration, dialogue and feedback.

Professional Network Forum

The Professional Network Forum is an opportunity for Western’s professionals to meet and discuss matters of strategic importance to the University, and to learn about relevant learning and development topics.

Western Staff & Leaders' Conference

Held in February, Western’s Staff & Leaders' Conference offers engaging key-note speakers, workshops, and tours of some of Western’s key research and support facilities.

Customized Certificate Program

Western Human Resources sponsors the following certificate program customized for Western employees.  Courses are delivered by Continuing Studies at Western.

Western Certificate in Management (Western CIM)

Eight courses on a variety of management topics;  this program is for staff and leaders engaged in human resource functions, accounting or finance as part of their work. Graduates receive a designation from the Canadian Institute of Management.
