Foundational Leadership Skills Program

 

Who should take this program...

  • Those in formal leadership roles at Western who lead and influence individual and group performance.

This program...

  • Applies research on participative/collegial leadership by James Kouzes, Dr. Barry Posner, and Dr. Thomas Gordon

  • Uses a 360° feedback tool to assess your current leadership practices

  • Explores work style preferences and ways to use differences to leverage excellence in a group setting

  • Builds the skills for working and communicating effectively with individuals and with groups — and for handling the tough conversations that are part of any leader’s day

  • Helps participants clarify their accountabilities and increase their understanding of their own and others’ behaviour and motivations

  • Includes an optional skills coaching component for interested participants as follow-up to the course.

Over 500 Academic and Administrative Leaders at Western
have participated in this program.

What’s Involved?
A leaders’ learning group of 12 to 15 people stays together for 7.5 days, spread over a year. The first three parts occur within 3 months; part 4 occurs within one year.

  • Part 1: “Understanding Leadership” - 3 days
    (360 degree feedback, Work Style Preferences)

  • Part 2: “Leader Effectiveness Training” (L.E.T.) - 3 days(Communication Skills)

  • Part 3: L.E.T. Refresher - 1/2 day

  • Part 4: One-Year Follow-Up - 1 day
    (Repeat 360 degree Feedback)

Cost - Course costs are covered by Western Human Resources, and are offered at no charge to participants.

Withdrawal Fee - Once you register, we begin preparing materials and resources for your participation. If you need to withdraw from a course, your department may incur a fee of up to $150.00 to help cover the costs of these resources.
