The University of Western Ontario is currently registered with the Ontario Ministry of Labour to use and store the X-ray equipment. The University has established the X-ray Safety Program to comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act and X-ray Safety Regulation. The X-ray Safety Program structure includes the Senior Management, the Radiation Safety Coordinator and the Radiation Safety Committee.

The University issues the Internal Permits to a University employee who is the Principal Investigator or Person in Charge of the locations where the X-ray equipment are used or stored. All users must meet the following requirements:

1. Be 18 years of age. Complete the University of Western Ontario X-ray Safety Training Program: X-ray Safety Training Course and specific hands-on training on a particular X-ray machine by Person in Charge or Contact Person. Be designated as X-ray Worker. Have an Internal Permit or work under an Internal Permit. Wear the required dosimeters (TLD badges). Be familiar with the University of Western Ontario X-ray Safety Manual.
2. Pregnant X-ray Worker must inform her Permit Holder and the Radiation Safety Coordinatoras soon as she is aware of her condition.

The University of Western Ontario is committed to taking every reasonable precaution, as is practical, to maintain radiation exposure to staff, students and the public to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). The X-ray Safety Program is designated to keep radiation exposures to ALARA by:

1. Management control over work practices. Personnel qualification and training. Control of occupational and public exposure to radiation.
2. Planning for emergency situations.
