Introduction
Since 1991 the Ministry of Education and Training (MET) has provided
grants to colleges and universities to support initiatives relating
to the safety of women.
In previous years,
the Ministry has requested that institutions undertake activities
including
adopting sexual harassment policies
and procedures, conducting safety audits, offering programs of attitudinal
change for men, providing support for women’s centres, and
supporting initiatives which address homophobia and lesbian/bisexual
issues. Projects previously funded by these grants through The President’s
Committee on the Safety of Women on Campus (PCSWC) include funding
for: emergency telephones, training on date and acquaintance sexual
assault awareness, the Women’s Issues Network, Orientation
Week educational activities, a campus accessibility map, etc.
Goals of the

awarded
to Western
from MET, which must be used for initiatives
to continue improving the safety on campus for women students and
workers through support for programs dealing with women’s safety,
sexual harassment, and violence against women. This funding can continue
current activities, off-shoots of these, or new initiatives that
ensure that women’s safety issues continue to be addressed
in the future.
