Living in Residence
Western's Residence Network

Get Connected with RezNet

RezNet, or Residence Network, extends campus-wide network connectivity and Internet access to all of the residences at UWO. The UWO Campus Network provides high-speed access to e-mail services, course and on-campus web sites, and the UWO Library System. Take advantage of our online campus resources -- many of our faculties offer course information and assignments on the campus network, as well as online exams, course newsgroups and more!

Why should I sign up for RezNet?

RezNet provides fast, on-demand access to the UWO Campus Network. You can:

  • View electronic course material
  • Access the Internet for project research
  • Stay in touch with professors, friends and family through e-mail
  • Find a book or journal at one of the on-campus libraries
  • Download UWO site-licensed software
How do I connect to the Residence Network?

To connect to RezNet, you need a network-capable computer and a 10Base-T network card. If you will be purchasing a new computer, we suggest that you have a RezNet-supported network card installed as part of your system purchase. If you already own a computer, we recommend that you purchase our RezNet Starter Kit. It contains a RezNet-supported network card and customized installation instructions. We are able to offer quality network cards at a competitive price due to the large quantities that we purchase. Please note that the RezNet Starter Kit is for PC users only. If you require a network card for a Macintosh computer, please contact your local dealer. For more information on RezNet-supported 10Base-T network cards, please consult our web site. Please note that there are two network connections in each double room.

How do I sign up?
Simply check the appropriate boxes on your Residence Placement Questionnaire. The cost of the RezNet service for the 2001-2002 academic year is $180. In addition, if you choose to purchase the RezNet Starter Kit, please select either a desktop or laptop preference. The 2000-2001 kit prices were $30 for desktops and $75 for laptops. Please consult the RezNet web site for updated prices as they become available. Your residence fee invoice will reflect the applicable RezNet charges.
Is it too late to sign up now?

Check your Residence invoice. If you indicated "yes" to RezNet on your Residence Placement Questionnaire, you will note a charge of $100 for the RezNet connection service. If this charge does not appear on your invoice, please e-mail housing@uwo.ca to request the service.

What if I need help?

Although each subscriber is responsible for installing his/her own network card and for getting connected to RezNet, we have an excellent student support team available to assist residents with configuration issues.

A RezNet handbook will be distributed on move-in day to all students who have signed up for the RezNet service. It contains instructions for configuring most PC and Macintosh operating systems for RezNet.

You must bring your original operating system disk(s), the network card driver diskette(s) that come with the network card, and any related manuals. The files on these disks will be needed to successfully configure your computer to RezNet.

Recommended Configuration:

PC

Macintosh

  • Network-capable Pentium system
  • Windows 9x/ME
  • 32 MB of memory
  • CD-ROM
  • SVGA Monitor
  • a supported 10Base-T
    network card
  • Power Mac
  • Network ready
  • System 8.x or above
  • 32 MB of memory
  • CD-ROM
  • SVGA Monitor
  • a supported 10Base-T
    network card

Also Bring
- Operating System disks or CD (e.g. Windows 95), original software disks, manuals. These will help with troubleshooting problems that may arise. Windows 3.x is not supported on our RezNet network.

Note:

Keep in mind that not all systems are capable of being networked even if they meet our recommended configurations. This includes some systems that are advertised as Internet-ready or network-ready.

Residence Computer Labs
  • Computer labs are located in most residences
  • Most labs are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Software in each lab includes Corel WordPerfect Suite, Microsoft Office, Netscape Navigator, the Off-Campus Housing Program, and more
  • Access to e-mail accounts is provided
  • Printing service is available in most computer labs
