Packing for the big day
Long before you get to campus, the planning will begin. You may already
have compiled a list of necessities you will need to make your residence
room feel like home. Just remember, the first time you walk into your
room, it will look sparse -- nothing at all like the way you've envisioned
it all these months. However, as you move your stuff in and get settled,
it will quickly begin to look like home.
What
does the University provide in my room?
- bed frame and mattress [196 cm (77") long by 91
cm (36") wide]
- desk and chair

- closet
- dresser
- desk lamp
- wastebasket and recycling bin
- corkboard
- bookshelves
- mattress protector
- pillow and pillow protector (you're welcome to bring
your own)

May I use my own furniture in my room?
No. Furnishings must be properly assembled and meet safety standards,
therefore, the only furniture allowed in student rooms is university-issued.
Overstuffed, plastic, or combustible furnishings procured from other
sources may be a safety hazard or pose an increased risk of fire.
Can I "customize" and disassemble my furniture the
way I like?
No. For safety reasons no furniture is to be disassembled for any
reason, nor is furniture to be reassembled in a manner for which it
was not originally designed. Any furniture that is disassembled will
need to be reassembled by a recognized professional at the student's
cost. Any student who takes apart his/her furniture in any way will
face disciplinary sanctions.
Can I get a small refrigerator for my room?
The University has a preferred supplier of rental refrigerators for
residents at favourable rates. Upon arrival, you and your roommate
can make the necessary arrangements together. Refrigerators brought
into the residence from home must be in excellent working condition
and conform to all safety, health, and size regulations. Maximum size:
65 cm (24") deep, 49 cm (18") wide, and 90 cm (30"
high). Refrigerators are provided in Alumni House, Elgin Hall and
in Essex Hall.
What if I want to make a snack?
In Saugeen-Maitland Hall and Delaware Hall, common area kitchenettes
are provided for floor social functions and for preparing light snacks.
The kitchenettes are not designed for food storage nor the preparation
of full meals. Except in Alumni House, Elgin Hall and Essex Hall,
preparation of meals is prohibited in residence because of the danger
of fire and problems of sanitation.
