Living in Residence
Focused-interest Floors

Leaving home and friends to live in a university residence, where you might not know anyone, can seem overwhelming.  Students have found that a great way to get involved is by living on a Focused-interest Floor, where a friend is as close as next door!

What will you gain from living on a Focused-interest Floor, beyond your regular residence life?

  • An easy way to meet people who share your interests
  • Specially designed programs and events
  • Easier access to study groups and social activities
  • Enhanced career and life skills
  • Increased academic potential due to a particularly supportive environment
  • A fun and exciting place to live!

FACULTY-BASED FLOORS
Faculty-based Floors provide a tremendous opportunity for students to enhance their academic experience.  Students living on the Faculty-based Floors benefit from the friendship and support of being in direct daily contact with other first-year students who share their classes, academic interests and course load.  Each of these floors provide residents with informal out-of-class contact with professors as well as programs designed to complement their interests such as career nights, academic counselling, exam review sessions, and an opportunity to meet their respective deans.

If you are registered in any one of these faculties or programs, why not consider this exciting option?

Join us for what is sure to be a creative experience as faculties work with us to enhance residence life and help smooth the transition for first-year students into the university community.

WHY NOT JOIN A STUDY CLUSTER?

New to the residence system this year, we are now offering students the opportunity to live on a floor with students who share at least two of their classes together! Beyond simply living on a floor with people from their same faculty, interested students can now choose to have an even more comprehensive and focused academic support team to live and learn with in residence. Imagine the academic benefits of living and forming study groups with people who are facing the same essay, midterm, and presentation deadlines as you are! Ease your transition to university, build some great friendships in the process, and take advantage of a great study resource right in your own home. To kick off this new initiative, we're piloting two study clusters in residence for the 2001/2002 academic year. Students who are considering the following areas of study and who are planning to enrol in the classes listed are eligible to apply to live in a study cluster:

Science: Biology 022, Chemistry 020 (first-year students)
Social Science: Psychology 020, Sociology 020 (first-year students)
Administrative and Commercial Studies (ACS) (first- and upper-year students)

Just check the appropriate boxes on the Residence Placement Questionnaire in the offer package that is mailed to you in the spring. (Please note that while we will make every effort to accommodate your request, we are unable to guarantee your placement in a study cluster. Please also note that you and your requested roommate must be in the same courses in order to be placed together in a study cluster.)

SCHOLAR'S ELECTIVES PROGRAM and AEP FLOORS
If you are enrolled in the Scholar's Electives Program or the AEP (Academic Excellence Program) and would like to connect with other students in these programs, why not choose to live on one of these floors?  It's a great opportunity to participate in a community of like-minded students who are interested in extending their academic experience from the classroom to their residence room.  Share the excitement of meeting students who have similar goals and interests to you and have the opportunity to take part in special programs designed to enhance your academic experience while you are at Western.[Top]

COOKS' CORNER
You don't have to be an experienced cook to enjoy living on Cooks' Corner.  Being on your own doesn't have to mean surviving on macaroni and cheese or "eggs, any style."  Take this opportunity to share your culinary ideas and learn some tips from a residence chef...anywhere from the basics to gourmet challenges.[Top]

QUIET LIFESTYLE FLOORS
Evening quiet hours are observed in each residence; however, those who prefer to live in an environment with greater restrictions on noise may request to live on a Quiet Lifestyle Floor.  These floors are arranged as demand dictates.  Standards for quiet are set by the residents of each floor.  Other focused-interest floors are not designated as Quiet Lifestyle Floors so you should consider this when ranking your choices.[Top]

ALCOHOL-FREE FLOORS
Some students may request to have an abstainer as a roommate and we are pleased now to offer you the opportunity to live on a floor with others who have indicated the same preference.  It is the responsibility of each member of an alcohol-free floor to maintain the integrity of this option.  If applying to this floor, it is expected that you will refrain from any alcohol consumption.[Top]

VARSITY ATHLETES' FLOOR
No matter which varsity sport you are in, students who are involved in a busy, but exciting schedule of games and practices will welcome the opportunity to share a floor with other varsity athletes enrolled at Western. Meeting the challenges of a demanding athletic program while maintaining your academics is easier when you can connect with others who are facing a similar schedule, or when you'd just like someone to help cheer you on! (If you are interested in living on this floor, just talk to your coach and he/she will add your name to the list for consideration.)[Top]

Please Note: There is no additional cost to live on any of these floors. All floors are co-ed (except the International floor, which is arranged into same-gender wings.)
