APPLICATIONS FOR RESIDENCE

FIRST-YEAR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

STUDENTS RETURNING TO UWO (main campus)

TRANSFER, PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

FIRST-YEAR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

No formal application is necessary. All first-year undergraduate students meeting the eligibility requirements will receive either a guaranteed residence offer or a waiting list offer with their academic offer. You may also wish to review the information on our residence offer process.

  • Guaranteed Residence Offer:

At Western, your opportunity to live in residence is guaranteed! For the 2001-2002 academic year, if you are a single student coming directly from high school, and have received an offer of full-time, first-year admission to The University of Western Ontario by mid-May, then your place in residence is GUARANTEED. No strings, no surprises. We're pleased to have you join our residence community and we want to make sure that your residence environment supports your academic pursuits. (Students registering at Brescia, Huron or King's are not eligible for guaranteed residence at Western's main campus.)

Special consideration will be given to first-year international students who do not meet the above requirements, as space permits.

Please note that our guaranteed eligibility requirements are reviewed annually, and as such, are subject to change for the following year.

  • Waiting List Offer:

All other first-year undergraduate students not meeting the guaranteed residence offer criteria above will be sent a residence waiting list application to complete and return (e.g., students with previous post-secondary education, mature students, late academic offers).

STUDENTS RETURNING TO UWO (main campus)

After first year, all eligible students must reapply and are admitted to residence strictly through a lottery process. Applications are available online in mid-January. Priority is given to continuing scholar recipients.

TRANSFER, PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply online for residence once you have been adjudged academically admissible to The University of Western Ontario (main campus). You will need a valid Western student identification number in order to apply. Priority is given to returning UWO students through a lottery process. Once the lottery has taken place, all new applications will be added to our waiting list in the order of the date received. Residence offers will be made throughout the summer depending on availability.

Single Room Requests

The majority of first-year students are accommodated in double rooms. However, there are a limited number of single rooms available in the traditional-style residences. If you indicate a "yes" response to this question you are signifying to us that if a single room becomes available for you, we should disregard your request for a specific roommate. Your roommate will not necessarily be upgraded to a single room as well, and may be matched with another roommate. If you are upgraded to a single room, you will be assessed the additional single-room fee. Single-room upgrades are based primarily on such factors as age and lottery number.

Please note: Presidents' and Faculty Entrance Scholarship recipients are guaranteed a single room. Please indicate a "no" response if you wish to decline your single-room guarantee.

If you are assigned to a double room, would you prefer to be upgraded to a single room in a traditional-style residence if one becomes available?

Please note that, based on situations of high demand, there are no guarantees that a single room will be offered.

Building and Lifestyle Preferences

Step 1. Please rank ALL of the building choices. Keep in mind that the demand for a particular residence is sometimes higher than the number of spaces available. While we do our best to consider your choices, we cannot guarantee that you will not be placed in the building of your last choice. Assignment is done in lottery-number order.

Step 2. This section is optional. If you indicate no lifestyle choices, it will be assumed that you prefer to be placed on a regular floor. Focused-interest Floors are created as demand dictates. In some cases there may be more than one of each floor created. For example, there have often been several Fitness Floors in Saugeen-Maitland Hall. Likewise, there may not be enough demand to create a particular floor. You may choose up to FOUR lifestyle choices for each residence. All floors are co-ed with the exception of the specified single-gender floors and the International Floor, which has two single-gender wings (one female and one male).

Step 3. Faculty of Social Science and Science students only - If you are in the Faculty of Social Science or Science and are interested in living in a study cluster, please complete this section.

Selection Process
If you are interested in applying to the focused-interest floors, please rank only your top eight preferences in the appropriate boxes on your Residence Placement Questionnaire.  Selection for the focused-interest floors takes place at the time of room assignment.  You will find out your floor assignment and your roommate upon arrival in September.
