
It is important to build awareness of postdoctoral scholars at Western
and get postdocs participating in the university's community. To achieve this,
PAW needs your help! The following executive positions (as based on the constitution) are available starting immediately. NEW! In addition, based on our priorities this year, we need postdoctoral scholars volunteers to fill the following roles: (An estimate of the time required for each position as well as a description of the responsibilities is available below.) If you are interested in a particular topic or issue that is not listed below, we encourage you in letting us know how you would like to get involved. We may be able to tailor a position just for you! Interested postdocs may contact the association for further information at postdocs@uwo.ca. The Vice-President (External) shall be generally responsible for promoting the interests of PAW members by making representations to people and organizations external to the University. He/she acts as the PAW chief delegate to the External and shall perform any function of the President if necessary. The Vice-President (Finance) shall supervise all financial transactions of the PAW and act as the signing officer of the PAW in all financial transactions jointly with the President or The Secretary shall organize and act as Speaker for all Council, General and Annual General Meetings of the PAW and ensure that the minutes and documents of the legislative bodies of the PAW and its committees are recorded and kept available for inspection by the PAW members. The Secretary shall ensure that the Constitution and Bylaws are kept up to date and shall provide authoritative interpretation of the Constitution and Bylaws; he/she shall also be responsible for the maintenance and distribution of an official, up-to-date list of all current PAW Council members. She shall further be responsible for the distribution of a summary of the rules of procedure from Robert's Rules of Order to each member of the PAW Council, and ensures that all motions presented to PAW Council, General Meetings and the Annual General Meeting are worded clearly and appropriately. The Secretary shall inform in writing the PAW members of a group/department when it has not been represented at two successive PAW Council meetings; and shall be responsible for the maintenance of an up-to-date Policy manual. In the event that business must proceed in the absence of the Secretary, her/his duties shall be assumed by the Vice-President (Internal) or an appointee of the PAW Council. The Secretary will not take part in debate in any meeting which she/he chairs. Should it become necessary for the Secretary to participate in the debate, the Vice-President (Internal) or an appointee of the PAW Council will take the chair until debate on that matter is concluded. The PAW Senator shall represent the concerns and interests of the members of the Post-Doctoral Association at Western to the UWO Senate and report to the PAW Council on the activities of The University of Western Ontario Senate; he/she shall also report to the Annual General Meeting of the PAW. The Engineering Representative connects PAW with the Department of Engineering and facilitates communications between the two institutions. [TOP] HIGH Monitor discussion/post information. Be involved with the discussions initiated by PDS and make sure appropriate PAW board member is contacted when a question/concern is raised. Mostly reading emails. Occasional telephone conference calls (no more than 1/month). Research current questions or concerns (or find appropriate contacts) Unstructured, undefined MED This is a well formed professional graduate group who deal with issues such issues for grad students also exist for PDS (i.e. health plan, dental plan). As such, it would be good to have a working relationship with SOGS to learn from their experiences. The SSC (student success centre) is primarily set up undergraduate and graduate students, however there is a need to explore career opportunities and professional development for PDS. They are slightly more established and probably offer a lot of useful resources or knowledge in terms of developing a stronger association. Time commitments include annual conference, membership emails, and phone meetings. This discusses issues primarily focused on graduate students but there are some relevance to postdocs. This is a potential direction for postdocs to be involved, however we would need volunteers to find the appropriate committees and pursue this further (get a seat on the relevant committees) Meetings MED UCAC is to oversee and advise on all matters pertaining to the procurement, maintenance and use of animals as defined by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), hereafter referred to as ”animals,” for research, testing and teaching associated with the University and its affiliated bodies. Organize this either on or off campus (bowling, pubs, restaurant dinners, etc.). Unstructured, undefined LOW Social Committee Brown bag lunches: bring your own lunch but eat with fellow postdocs. This requires minimal organization, just need to see if there is a need, and select a location on campus, Maintain correspondence with group of interested PDS. This could be social gatherings in the park (in better weather), family skate downtown in Victoria park, Wonderland (an indoor play ground for children), the children's museum. First, identify those postdocs who are interested in such events and organize by contacting the venue of interest to set up a group event. Unstructured, undefined LOW Social Committee This volunteer position involves maintaining the current monthly infosocials. As such, you will need to send email reminders and come up with discussion topics based on current discussion board activities, and concerns of PDS. Unstructured, undefined LOW Social Committee Explore the opportunities for excursions (particularly relevant for international PDS interested in seeing parts of Ontario/Canada) available on campus (or off campus), summarize details, i.e. how to join clubs, dates regarding meetings, etc. Unstructured, undefined LOW PSCEE (President’s Standing Committee for Employment Equity) Representative Monthly meetings: This committee is responsible for examining the University’s employment policies and practices as they relate to persons with disabilities, women, visible minorities and Aboriginal persons. Vice-President (Internal) in accordance. He/she presents an Annual PAW Budget to Council on or before February 1, presents to PAW Council in September a Balance Sheet and Income Statement, and presents a Balance Sheet and Income Statement from December 1 to the present at Annual General Meeting. The Vice-President (Finance) chairs the Finance Standing Committee and is authorized to approve any non-budgeted expenditure of one hundred ($100) dollars or less, and report such expenditures to the PAW Council, shall arrange that the PAW financial books be independently audited, and can perform any function of the President if necessary.Secretary
