A new way for postdocs to interact and share information with other UWO postdocs!
PAW wishes to interact and share information with postdocs by also using the UWO tools available. From now on, you can access the PAW-WebCT by logging in with your UWO-credentials to your OWL account: http://webct.uwo.ca (then click on The University of Western Ontario) or https://owl.uwo.ca/webct/entryPage.dowebct?insId=5116011&glcid=URN%3AX-WEBCT-VISTA-V1%3A8f2fefab-ac1d-3921-012d-73abf656f884&insName=University+of+Western+Ontario&actionType=
Our link is “Postdoctoral Association - news and resources”. Check it out, comment, discuss, interact!
It is up to us how we want to use this space, what do we want to use it for and how often it will be used. If you have any comments, would like some topics added or a new discussion open, just post your message there or write us an email (postdocs@uwo.ca). The calendar will be updated with our meetings and social get-togethers, so you can always check when and where do we meet again.
If you cannot access the WebCT - let us know (postdocs@uwo.ca). To log in you will need your UWO email address.
So - go on and check it out!
The WebCT area is brought to you by your WebCT coordinator, Anna Hanuszkiewicz.

As we previously mentioned, PSAC (the union for PDA's) and UWO are currently in the process of negotiating a new collective agreement between PDA's and the university. PSAC has asked PAW to forward on the following information to our postdocs:
Although this is really only important to our PDA's, PDF's should feel free to keep themselves informed. Remember, PAW is only an information resource and is NOT involved in these negotiations. PAW does not condone any actions by the union or the university on these matters.

Call for volunteers!
PAW has recently gain postdoctoral representation on the following committees:
- UWO Biosafety committee: This is a new position on the Committee. The Biosafety Committee examines biosafety issues as they pertain to research and other activities on campus, thus the decisions of the Committee affect many members of PAW. For more information, please see Section 1.3 of the Biosafety Manual:
http://www.uwo.ca/humanresources/docandform/docs/healthandsafety/biosafety/biosafety_manual.pdf
- GEC (Graduate Education Council): This committee was originally set up to discuss the graduate education policies and changes, however is now moving
towards incorporating changes to postdoctoral policies and processes. As such it is imperative to have representation on this committee. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, has asked for a volunteer to attend these meetings.
- SUIT (Senate for University Information Technology): This committee reports to the Senate Committee on University Planning (SCUP) on matters relating to information technologies and the World Wide Web at Western. For more information: http://www.uwo.ca/univsec/senate/cteeterms/suit.pdf
Any of these positions would provide you with valuable leadership and networking opportunities. Please email us at postdocs@uwo.ca if you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions or any of our other positions http://www.postdocs.uwo.ca/available_positions.html.

Call for Nominations/Volunteers for PAW Presidency and other positions.
As my term as President of PAW and Alexandra's term as VP of PAW are coming to an end, the time has come for obtaining nominations for a new President and VP as well as other constitutional positions (e.g. Secretary, VP-Finance, VP-external, PAW senator).
The person who holds any of these positions has a great opportunity to gain insights into political and administrative processes occurring at Universities, as well as valuable leadership experience, and the chance to meet incredible people in the university community. Furthermore, I believe that having the role of President has set my CV/resume apart when looking for employment.
I would urge all interested parties to submit a nomination or volunteer by June 10, 2011 to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity by emailing PAW at postdocs@uwo.ca.
SGPS and PAW will be hosting the first Annual General Meeting and summer BBQ in July to vote on the different positions.
If you have any further questions regarding the process, please email PAW at postdocs@uwo.ca.
Further information on PAW's constitution (http://www.postdocs.uwo.ca/constitution.html), bylaws (http://www.uwo.ca/grad/PAW/bylaws.html), and available positions (http://www.postdocs.uwo.ca/available_positions.html).
Cheers,
Stephanie Dixon (PAW President)

The Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars (CAPS) is a national committee of postdoctoral scholars and representatives who meet regularly (and virtually) to discuss issues arising across the country. Among these issues include postdoctoral taxation and the Tri-Council postdoctoral stipends levels.
As UWO postdocs, you are automatically CAPS members. As such, we would encourage you to join the CAPS General Members google group or the Facebook group to hear about the latest dealings of CAPS on your behalf.
CAPS is looking for feedback on the development of their governance document (http://tinyurl.com/4dmgg23). If you have any comments on the document, please contact your UWO Institutional representative, Chris Corkery (ccorker@uwo.ca) by Monday April 4, 2011.

Are you looking for an affordable gym? Postdocs are eligible for membership at UWO's Campus Rec at the student rate ($19/month or $171/year). To get this rate, make sure to identify yourself as a postdoc to the Campus Rec staff. Please note, if your ID card says "staff or faculty", you may need to bring your contract along or you will be charged more.

In the next weeks, we will be sending you examples of how you can become involved. If you have a specific interest, we may be able to tailor a position for you! We know that postdoctoral scholars are very busy establishing themselves as independent scientists, however, many of these positions will not require much of your time and will only help build your resume and network. PAW’s goals this year were to:
- Increase the postdoctoral scholar awareness at UWO.
- Give postdoctoral scholars a venue to meet with other postdoctoral scholars.
- Work with SGPS to inform them about what postdocs need and want from their UWO experience
- Provide information to postdoctoral scholars regarding services offered to them by UWO.
We have accomplished this by:
-
-
Maintaining our uwo postdoc mailing list to send you uptodate and pertinent information
-
Setting up monthly infosocials on the last Thursday at the Grad Club from 3.30pm to 5.30pm
-
-
Setting up an official PAW discussion group where you can ask questions or share advice about your experience at Western with both PAW and other postdocs ( More information to follow but this will be on WebCT
http://webct.uwo.ca/- you will require a valid UWO account and password.).
There are still many plans for building the postdoctoral community as well as providing professional and social development opportunities to postdoctoral scholars.
In order for us to succeed, PAW needs you to help us help you!
We encourage you to:
-
-
Let your peers know that they should sign up to our mailing list by emailing us at
postdocs@uwo.ca.
-

Dear Fellow Postdocs,
It is time again for our annual general meeting, and a number of positions are available in the PAW Executive Council. If you want to make your voices as Postdocs heard, this is the place to get involved and to become active!
We offer an excellent opportunity for you to prove that your qualifications include more than a good publication record. No matter if you aim for a job in academia or industry, it is always an asset to show that you excel in a variety of skills, and most faculty appointments currently even require 60% research, 20% teaching and 20% service. Beef up your CV with service experience and be front of the line when your CV is on the desk of a search committee- join the PAW executive council this fall! Everyone can contribute, and the more Postdocs participate, the greater is the benefit for all, and the smaller is the workload for each of us. Make the Postdoc experience at Western a great experience for your career and personal development, and help making it a good experience for others as well by joining the Council!
The list with descriptions of positions can be viewed here.
We want to pick best date, so most of you can make it.
To help us do this please vote here which date & time in November will work best for you to attend.
Thank you for voting! Wed, Nov 18th, turned out to be the better date.
Location of the meeting will be the Room 2024 in the Social Science Centre on Wed. Nov. 18th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
We look forward to meet you soon!
All the best,
PAW executive
