Power Plant

The Power Plant at The University of Western Ontario is responsible for the production of high pressure steam serving Western’s campus, University Hospital, Siebens Drake Research Institute, and Robarts Research Institute and chilled water serving Western’s campus and Siebens Drake Research Institute.

The Power Plant staff is comprised of 10 Stationary Engineers- 2 for maintenance and operating assignments.  The Plant is a 24 hour, 365 day operation with a Stationary Engineer on duty at all times.

Other responsibilities include Western’s compressed air system, the waste incinerator, the back-up fuel oil system to the boilers, water treatment for the equipment, 10 satellite boiler plants, and 5 remote chiller plants.

The Power Plant located at the south end of campus consists of natural gas fired boilers producing approximately 410,000 lbs. / hr of high pressure steam, and electric chillers producing approximately 6,000 tons of cooling.  The North Chiller Plant located in Natural Science Centre produces approximately another 4,000 tons of cooling.
