Western hosts electronic waste drive
October 15, 2012
In partnership with the Ontario Electronic Stewardship and
EnviroWestern, Facilities Management is hosting an e-waste drive which is being
held from Monday October 15th
to Sunday October 21st, during National Waste Reduction Week.
For every item participants will be rewarded with a ballot for a chance to win a prize valued at $100.
E-waste can be deposited on campus from 10 AM to 2 PM at the bin located in the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Parking Lot. On Wednesday, October 17, items can also be deposited from 7:30 am to 8:30 am to accommodate staff who wish to drop items off before work.
Accepted items include TVs, computers, printers, cell phones, audio/video devices and many others. For the complete list of the electronic materials that will be accepted at this event, please visit www.recycleyourelectronics.ca.
Proper disposal of e-waste is important in order to reduce space taken up in landfills, prevent greenhouse gas emissions and to protect the environment. E-waste can contaminate water supplies, air and soil because it contains toxic materials. These materials include lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium, which can be very harmful to humans and wildlife. The proper disposal of e-waste not only allows for the protection of humans and wildlife, but also allows for items to be broken down into base components and properly recycled or reused. By bringing your old electronics to Western’s e-waste drive you will be disposing of them in a safe, environmentally-friendly way.
