New Building and Major Renovation Projects

Western recently began a $230 million dollar expansion to its campus.  A combination of new construction, renovations and updates will be completed over the course of the next 6-7 years. 

The following page lists and details many of these projects.  Please note that each project is subject to timeline changes as well as approval and scope alterations.

Current Initiatives

Facilities Management - Capital ProjectsNew Residence (Western Rd. & Sarnia Rd.) 

• Located at the former Althouse College Parking lot
• The residence will accommodate 1,000 students in approximately 357 suites, for a total building size around 370,000 square feet
• The suites will be traditional style with washrooms but no kitchen, with a mix of single, double and quad units distributed throughout the building
• The residence will be complete with lounges, study rooms and a dining facility
• The building is targeting LEED® silver

Completion: 600 beds are scheduled for August of 2013, the remaining rooms will be completed by January 2014

Richard Ivey School of Business (Western Rd. location) 

Facilities Management - Capital Projects• The new Richard Ivey School of Business will be approx. 270,000 square feet comprised of case study classrooms, breakout rooms, auditorium, dining hall, faculty and staff offices.
• The building has been designed to LEED® Gold and incorporates such features as a cistern for grey water and a green roof.
• The design competition was held in March 2009-
• Commission was awarded to Hariri Pontarini Architects in April, 2009

Completion: Phase 1, Complete - Phase 2, 2013 

HBA (formerly Ivey)
Renovations to current Ivey building would follow construction of new Ivey School building. Would provide campus core academic space.

Completion: 2014


Family Medicine

 

Facilities Management - Capital Projects• The proposed facility, which will be LEED® Silver certified, will be approximately 66,000 square feet
• Family Medicine will be on Ground and second floors, the third and fourth floors will be for the Graduate Program in Public health and the Schulich School of Medicine
• This facility will be used for advanced education and training for family medicine physicians and will act as a hub for family medicine research
• The building will also have 150-seat classrooms, break rooms and clinical trials suite

Completion: Spring 2013


Advanced Manufacturing Park
The Advanced Manufacturing Park will house: WINDEEE, the Advanced Manufacturing Centre and the Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research

Facilities Management - Facilities EngineeringFraunhofer Project Centre
• 10,000 square feet high bay industrial-type building.
• Joint venture between the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical technology and Dieffenbacher from Germany, and the faculty of Engineering
• The building will house a large industrial press, along with other composite manufacturing process lines,  a research lab and ancillary spaces
• The total project value is $3.4 million
• Targeting LEED® Silver Cetification

Completion: Fall 2012

Facilities Management - Facilities EngineeringWind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WINDEEE)
• It will be the world’s first facility to create tornadoes at a large scale, as well as down bursts, horizontal and vertical shear forces and other unique wind scenarios
• This is a $33 million project. $14.9 million are for the construction of the building, which will have 29,000 square feet, including the dome with an array of 106 fans
• Construction has just started and the project is to be completed and operational by December 2013
• This project is targeting a LEED® Silver Certification

Advanced Manufacturing Centre
• 9,000 square feet will house supporting offices for the Faculty of Engineering and visiting researchers, post-docs and graduate students. Plus an additional 3,900 square feet for future expansion.
• There will be meeting rooms, conference and lounge areas. It will also serve as a hub for research intensive buildings like WINDEEE and the Fraunhofer Project Centre.
• This project is targeting a LEED® Silver Certification.

Physics & Astronomy building renovation

Facilities Management - Capital Projects
• Phase 1 was completed in January of 2011 and is now occupied by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy.
• Phase 2 will be completed by December 2011 and is expected to be occupied by January 2012.
• The total gross area that the project involves is 109,250 square feet, with a total construction budget of $21.18 million
• This project is targeting LEED® Silver Certification

Completion: Phase 1, Complete - Phase 2, Dec. 2011 - Phase 3, July 2012
