Qualified students have access to a financial support package, which may consist of a combination of programme-based funding (e.g. from a supervisor's research grant), scholarships from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and income from employment (e.g. a Graduate Teaching Assistantship). This package is designed to cover a substantial portion of a student's expenses for the eligible period of funding in his/her programme.
To be eligible for FGS Financial Support students must be registered full-time.
In the 2013-14 academic year, a Canadian Master’s student (non external award winner) in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will typically receive a basic funding package of $13,800, made up of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship worth $9,464 and a Western Graduate Research Scholarship in the amount of $4,336. International students hold an important place in graduate studies. Thus, the comparable package for an international Master’s student is made up of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship worth $9,464 and a Western Graduate Research Scholarship worth $14,136 for a total of $23,600. This higher amount is designed to offset higher tuition fees for international students.
