Fourth Year Student Registration Information

The information below is intended to help students in the School of Health Studies who are entering their fourth year as they prepare for course registration (June 20-23). Due to the number of student inquiries that are received by the School of Health Studies on a daily basis, please read through the information on this page to find the answer to your question before contacting the office.

Full course descriptions for most courses are available in the Academic Calendar. For special topics courses that were offered previously, course outlines can be accessed on the School of Health Studies website. Course outlines for the 2017-18 academic year will be posted as soon as they become available.

The Online Timetable lists all courses being offered for the 2017-18 academic year, including notes regarding course priorities and restrictions. Please be sure to check course restrictions and prerequisites in the Academic Calendar prior to attempting to register. Course priorities and/or restrictions are not usually waived.

Not all courses have had instructors assigned to them yet, but that information will be posted to the Online Timetable when it becomes available.

Registration Times and Class Enrolment

NOTE: Students are assigned registration times at random.

A few courses offered through the School of Health Studies may fill up quickly. Students cannot receive special permission to be added to a course that is full. If a course has filled, you should still complete your schedule by taking other courses. Priorities will lift or change on July 21 and you will be able to add and drop certain courses at that time. Courses that filled quickly may become available. Keep in mind, courses listed as "Restricted" do not lift at all. Keep checking enrolment even after this date (July 21) as add/drop activity will continue throughout the summer, including an extended online web registration period beginning August 22.

Prerequisites and Course Restrictions

Only courses listed in the online timetable are being offered during the 2017-18 academic year. We are not planning to add any more courses (or additional sections to courses currently listed) at this time. Please be sure you have taken the prerequisite before attempting enrol in a course. 

Students requiring special permission to take non-Health Sciences courses should contact the department offering the course. If/when permission is granted, the department should forward a notice of permission to our office via email ( to be noted on your academic record. To enrol in the course, you will need to call the helpline at 519-661-2100 when your online registration appointment opens.

If you receive an error message when registering for a course, be sure to check the prerequisite in the Academic Calendar and the course notes in the online timetable for an explanation. It is very important to check the notes and prerequisites when you receive an error message.

New Courses for 2017-18

The School of Health Studies is excited to offer several new course options for the 20017-18 academic year, including some that incorporate experiential learning opportunities.


Aging Globally: Lessons from Scandinavia – HS 3091B

Aging Globally is an international course that will introduce 25-30 students to healthcare systems, public health policies, homecare delivery practices, hospitals, long-term care homes, aging research and exemplary community initiatives in three Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The course will be offered as a third year, half course (0.5 FCE) elective in the winter term. It will start with seven bi-weekly two-hour mandatory lectures and conclude with a 10-day trip through Scandinavia in early May. Because of the travel, this course does have an additional cost to it.

Application: Registration in this class requires an application through the Student Success Centre. Log in to Western Career Central for the application.

Health Advocacy – HS 3141Y

Advocacy plays a key role in the development of health policy. The Canadian Public Health Association, for example, describes advocacy as a “core function” of public health associations. Effective advocacy requires both knowledge and experience, which students will develop by creating an advocacy campaign that will impact local communities and beyond. (Note: This course is 0.5 credits that runs from September to April)

Prerequisites/Co-Requisites: Health Sciences 3101A/B; Health Sciences 3400A/B

Note: This course requires students to be in third or fourth year of Honors Health Sciences program with an 80% average or better. An application is required for this course.

Application: Registration in this course requires students to complete an application, which is due by no later than July 1.


In addition to the Health Sciences Practicum and Independent Study courses that have been offered for many years, the School of Health Studies has added a Rehabilitation Sciences practicum option to the timetable for the 2017-18 academic year.

Conceptual and Practical Basis for Rehabilitation Practice (Rehab Sci Practicum) – RS 4970E

This experiential learning course offers an in depth examination of the required background, concepts and practical considerations related to a series of rehabilitation practices selected to expose the student to a broad range of activities over several patient populations and associated with a variety of health care disciplines.

Prerequisites/Co-Requisites: RS 4212A/B (or RS 4210A/B if taken prior to September 2017)

Note: This course requires students to be in the fourth year of an Honors Specialization module in the School of Health Studies, with a minimum average of 75%.

Application: Registration in this course requires students to complete an application, which is due by no later than July 1.


Antirequisites are listed in the Academic Calendar under course descriptions. It is important not to take antirequisite courses as you can’t receive academic credit for courses with similar content. You need to be especially careful with courses such as HS 3801B (if you haven’t completed it yet), as it’s considered an antirequisite to all other  statistics courses at the 2000 level or above.

NOTE: When there is an anti-requisite listed, you cannot take that course instead of the Health Sciences course.

Independent Study and Practicum Courses

Independent Study and Practicum courses are available only to honors module students in years 4 (or 5) of the Health Studies program. Information regarding these course options, including links to the applications that are required to be completed and submitted to our office, is available on the Practicum and Independent Study page.

Degree Requirements

It is important to be sure you have completed all the essay courses and breadth requirements for your degree. You have already all completed your Category ‘A’ (first year health sciences courses) and ‘C’ (first year Biology courses ) but you may still need your Category ‘B’ which is 1.0 course credits and/or your 2.0 essay courses (of which 1.0 must be at the 2000-level or higher but which does not necessarily need to be in Health Studies).

Returning Students (5th Year) Who Have Already Graduated

Students who have already graduated but are returning to take additional courses should reference the notes section of the online timetable. It is important to know that a variety of 3000- and 4000-level Health Studies courses will not be available until priorities lift on July 24.

Health Sciences 2000A/B - Highway to Health

With the exception of students from other programs with a Health Sciences minor, no Health Studies student may use this course towards their module. The other non-core required 2000-level courses offered – HS 2045A, HS2090B, and HS2200B – may be used toward module requirements.
