Title: Improving Rural Health Policy or Creating Healthy Rural Policy: Which Way for Ontario?
Mr. Jim Whaley is a Health Care Consultant who specializes in rural strategic planning and development of strategic partnerships for rural health care organizations. Over his career, he as worked extensively with the Ontario Ministry of Health and various provincial health associations on rural health policy initiatives. As part of his commitment to healthy and sustainable rural communities, Jim serves as the Chairman of the Ontario Rural Council. He is also past lecturer in the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program at The University of Western Ontario.

Speakers: Claudio Munoz, MD, PhD; Gwen Deveraux, RN; & W. Ken Milne, MD, CCFP-EM

Title: Building Research Infrastructure for Rural Health Issues: A Community-Driven Model in Southwestern Ontario
Dr. Munoz is the Scientific Director of the new Gateway Rural Health Research Institute in Seaforth, Huron County. He is also a Research Associate at the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre at the Robarts Research Institute.
Ms. Deveraux is a community development leader with interest in economical development for rural communites. She is also a physician recruiter leader for rural communites in Huron and Perth Counties.
Dr. Milne is a rural emergency physician, researcher and an adjunct professor at the Department of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario.
The team will speak about the vital mission and role of the Gateway Rural Health Research Institute in advancing rural health research, practice, education and policy.

Speaker: Nina Desjardins, M.D.

Title: Aboriginal Health
Dr. Nina Desjardins was born in Saskatchewan. Her father was Cree from Muskeg Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan. She obtained her B.Sc. (Honours in Biochemistry) from the University of Saskatchewan, her MD from the University of Alberta and completed her Psychiatric residency at the University of Western Ontario. While at the University of Alberta, she was a participant in the Aboriginal Health Careers Program and her involvement in Aboriginal Mental Health continues to this day. She is currently a Consultant Psychiatrist to the London ACT 2 team and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine and Denistry at the University of Western Ontario.
