TERM 1
9501 Gross Anatomy
The overall course objectives are to:
- Identify the major structures of each of the body regions
- Correlate structure and function as it applies to the gross anatomical features and overallfunction of the body systems
- Integrate basic physiological and biomechanical concepts, to better understand the grossanatomical structure and function
- Provide practical examples of how the anatomical knowledge may be applied to the students’ varied disciplines (kinesiology, physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT))
- Develop an appreciation for a number of injury mechanisms and congenital anomalies
- Have fun
PT9510 Professional Practice Issues
2 case/lecture hours per week for 14 weeks; .5 course credit

This mandatory course will be comprised of lecture/presentations, group discussions in assigned learning teams and case studies preparing the student for professional practice as an autonomous health care practitioner in a multidimensional health care environment.
PT9511 Foundations of Physical Therapy Practice
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 14 weeks; 1.5 course credits

This mandatory course is designed to introduce the underlying fundamentals of Physical Therapy practice. Students will gain an understanding of basic muscle physiology and biomechanics, pain mechanisms and control, underlying theories and use of therapeutic modalities, physiological changes across the lifespan, common pathologies, and gait aid theory and prescription.
PT9512 Integrated Assessment Skills
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 14 weeks; 1.5 course credits

This mandatory course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles and applications of basic techniques in physical therapy assessment. A modified case vignette approach is utilized throughout the course to augment theoretical knowledge and provide opportunities to apply knowledge to practical scenarios.
PT9513 Functional Anatomy
3 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 9 weeks; .5 course credit
- This is a mandatory course that consists of a three hour per week series of both lectures and labs. The course aims to introduce human functional anatomy as it applied to the clinical practice of physical therapy.
PT9531 Anatomy & Cell Biology Neuroscience for Rehabilitation Sciences
- The objective of this course is to develop a working understanding of the function and organization of the central and peripheral nervous system, emphasizing neurological examples encountered by rehabilitation professionals.
TERM 2a
PT9521 Regional Assessment
7 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 7 weeks; 1.5 course credits

The purpose of this mandatory course is to provide students with the opportunity to focus general assessment knowledge, skills and behaviours toward regional orthopaedic assessments. The course will introduce the fundamental components of regional orthopaedic assessments, with an emphasis on assessing global musculoskeletal impairments, rather than specific pathologies.
PT9522 Treatment of Regional Conditions
7 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 7 weeks; 1.5 course credits
- The purpose of the course is to provide an integrated approach to treatment including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the use of modalities. This mandatory course will focus on the treatment of physical impairments (eg pain, swelling, hypomobility) and functional limitations, rather than specific pathologies, using a clinical reasoning approach.
PT9523 Applied Cardiorespiratory Physiology
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 7 weeks; .5 course credit

This mandatory/required course focuses on the integrated study of human respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, with oxygen transport the conceptual basis for unified functioning, both at rest and in response to heightened physical activity (exercise stress), in order to support the variable metabolic needs of the body.
PT9528 Critical Appraisal and Evidence Based Practice
2 case/lecture hours per week for 14 weeks; .5 course credits
- This mandatory course is designed to provide students with the knowledge base and opportunities to develop the skills required to critically appraise the quantitative health care research literature in order to support a rational, evidence-based physical therapy practice.

PT9524 Physical Therapy in Community Settings I
4 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 14 weeks; 1.5 course credits

This course will examine common conditions of the neurological, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems across the life span in children and older adults seen by physical therapists working in community settings.
PT9525 Physical Therapy in Rehabilitation Settings I

- This course will examine common conditions of the neurological, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems across the life span in children and older adults seen by physical therapists working in community settings.
PT9526 Physical Therapy in Acute Care Settings I
4 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 14 weeks; 1.5 course credits

Course consists of a mixture of theoretical and practical learning experiences designed to fulfil the needs of the student in the critical evaluation and physical therapy management of the patient with either acute or chronic cardiac, vascular, respiratory, neurological, and/or musculoskeletal dysfunction commonly treated in the acute care (hospital) setting.
PT9527 Physical Therapy in Physical Therapy Clinics I

The purpose of this mandatory course is to provide students with an introduction to musculoskeletal conditions and their management.
TERM 3
PT9581 - Junior Clinical Experience (6 weeks)
Full-time clinical experience in a designated clinical placement setting.
- This Junior clinical experience placement will provide the opportunity for students to observe and practice basic assessment and treatment skills under the supervision of a registered Physical Therapist.
TERM 4
PT9535 Physical Therapy in Rehabilitation Settings II
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 9 weeks; .5 course credit
- This mandatory course is designed to introduce students to the complex rehabilitation patient and advance their knowledge and skill beyond the fundamental principles and applications of basic techniques in physical therapy assessment and treatment.
PT9536 Physical Therapy in Acute Care Settings II
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 9 weeks; .5 course credit
- This mandatory course is designed to fulfil the learning needs of the student in the critical multi-system physical, functional, and cognitive evaluation, and advanced physical therapy management of the more complex, often critically ill, patient treated in special care, medical and surgical units in an acute care setting.
PT9537 Physical Therapy in Physical Therapy Clinics II
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 9wks; .5 course credit
- The purpose of this mandatory course is to provide students with information about more complex musculoskeletal conditions and their management.
PT9539 Therapeutic Modalities
6 case/lecture/laboratory hours per week for 9 weeks; .5 course credit
- This mandatory course covers topics related to the use of therapeutic modalities in clinical practice. Students will learn about the theory and application of compression therapy and specialized types of electrical currents including high voltage pulsed current (HVPC), Interferential Current (IFC), Russian Stimulation and EMG triggered Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES).
PT9582 - Junior-Intermediate Clinical Experience (6 weeks)
Full-time clinical experience in a designated clinical placement setting.
- This mandatory junior-intermediate clinical experience placement will provide the opportunity for students to observe and practice basic assessment and treatment skills under the supervision of a registered Physical Therapist.
PT9590 (Supervised Research Project) - 1.0 course credit
- This mandatory course is designed to provide students with the opportunity vto be involved in research related to physical therapy and to utilize and expand upon the research skills developed in previous physical therapy courses.
Term 5
PT9540 Business & Entrepreneurship in PT - .5 course credit
- This mandatory course will introduce the student to current health and socio-economic systems within which physiotherapy services are provided.
PT9541 Physical Therapy in the Community II
.5 course credit
- This mandatory course continues on from Community Care I and will examine more complex conditions of the neurological, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems across all life spans seen by physical therapists working in community settings.
PT9542 Manual Therapy
.5 course credit
- This mandatory course will consolidate and expand theoretical knowledge and practical skills covered in previous musculoskeletal courses. There will be a large emphasis on practical application of specific techniques as they apply to the cervical, TMJ, lumbo-pelvic/hip regions.
*PT9543 Pharmacology for Physical Therapists
.5 course credit
- This elective course is designed to acquaint students with drug actions and side effects which may affect physical therapy treatment; to familiarize the student with the major types of drugs and medical reasons for drug treatment.
*PT9544 Sports Physiotherapy
.5 course credit
- This elective course is a series of lectures and labs to introduce the basic knowledge and skills that a physical therapist would require when working in a sports clinical setting or with a sports team.
*PT9545 Pediatrics
.5 course credit
This elective course will review:
- the sequence of typical development, with a focus on motor development
- and the variety of factors involved in the acquisition of early motor and functional abilities
- specific assessment and intervention approaches for children with congenital, developmental, and acquired motor disabilities.
*PT9546 Women's Health
.5 course credit
- This elective course is designed to introduce students to the role of physical therapists in women's health, specifically obstetrics and gynecology. Students will learn assessment and treatment.
*PT9547 Exercise in Special Populations
.5 course credit
- This elective course provides students with an introduction to the challenges in the clinical evaluation of physical function/fitness and the prescription of individualized programs intended to improve physical performance, condition and/or health, and the specific implications of exercise for a variety of conditions requiring specialized physical therapy care.
*PT9548 Motor Control Colloquium
.5 course credit
- The goal of this elective course is to expose students to the literature related to selected issues in motor control.
*PT9549 Advanced Therapeutic Modalities
.5 course credit
- This elective course is designed to provide the opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills needed to use therapeutic modalities in the treatment of chronic wounds.
PT9551 Understanding Pain in Rehabilitation
- This seminar course will build on the participant’s understanding of pain and the ability to manage the patient with pain.
PT9583 Intermediate-Senior Clinical Experience (6 weeks)
- This mandatory intermediate-senior clinical placement experience will provide the opportunity for students to be introduced to more complex and challenging cases emphasizing the skills required to assess, find and integrate information, select and perform treatment skills under the supervision of a registered Physical Therapist.
PT9584 Senior Clinical Experience (6 weeks)
- This mandatory senior clinical placement experience will provide the opportunity for participation as a student member of the health care team with exposure to all aspects of Physiotherapy service, clinical care, facility organization and professional/quality management, in a variety of clinical practice settings.

PT9550 Professional Consolidation

- This elective seminar course will build on the participant's understanding of pain and the ability to manage the patient with pain. Focus will be on persistent pain and pain-related disability problems, such as chronic low back pain, the `late whiplash syndrome, fibromyalgia and related conditions.
PT9585 Professional Consolidation Clinical Experience (6 weeks)
- This mandatory Professional Consolidation clinical placement experience will providethe opportunity for participation as a student member of the health care team with exposure to all aspects of Physiotherapy service, clinical care, facility organizationand professional/quality management, in a variety of clinical practice settings.
