Nursing Research Unit (NRU)

Faculty members' research interests

The Nursing Research Unit (NRU) was established in 1993 to support faculty research and scholarly activities. The NRU provides opportunities for dialogue among faculty and graduate student researchers through monthly Research Forums in which they share their results as well as issues that arise throughout the implementation of research projects.

Research development workshops related to research and scholarly activities have involved prominent international researchers such as Dr. William Avison, Evelyn Vingilis, Dr. Barney Glaser, Dr. Sandra Ferketich, Dr. Marie Cowan, Dr. Margarete Sandelowski, and Dr. Peggy Chinn.

The NRU provides assistance in grant preparation and grant management through consultation services, administrative support, meeting space, computer software and hardware and reference materials.  The Nursing Research Unit maintains updated notice boards of upcoming funding opportunities and calls for abstracts for scholarly conferences to keep the faculty and graduate students abreast of these opportunities.

Message from the Associate Director, Nursing Research

Cheryl ForchukIn 1993, the then Faculty of Nursing made a commitment to nursing research by establishing a research infrastructure through the Nursing Research Unit and creation of the position of Associate Director Nursing Research.  Since that time, research productivity at Western has accelerated tremendously.  Researchers in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing have attracted funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and private foundations to support their programs of research.  Nurse researchers in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing currently hold over nine million dollars of external funding.

Programs of research in the School address topics in health promotion, health services and nursing education. Consistent with the focus of our graduate programs, research programs to explore new approaches for preparing nurses for practice in our changing health care system and to investigate the nature of current nursing work environments with regard to their ability to enable professional practice are well established.

The NRU supports the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing through workshops, presentations, mentorship opportunities, and feedback on proposals.
