Procedures for Recommending Adjunct Appointments

1. In January of each year the Appointments Committee:
   • Invites nominations of individuals in the nursing community to be considered for adjunct appointments;
   • Informs School Council of the renewal of adjunct faculty with appointments ending during the current calendar year
2. By January 31st of each year, the following information will be submitted to the Chair of the Appointments Committee:
   • For new Adjunct appointments: Nominators will submit a letter of nomination (hard copy or email) that describes the work context and relationship with the nominee and suggestions regarding their potential involvement with the School. The nominator will ask the nominee to submit a current CV along with a cover letter. The letter should include what the individual believes s/he can contribute to the School (guest lectures, mentorship, preceptorship, research, publications, etc.).
     If the nominee is expected to be on thesis committees as a committee member, this information is to be included in the letter of nomination.
     NOTES:
     i) If the nominee’s qualifications might place them at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and information about future graduate contributions is not included in the nomination letter, the nominee will be considered for either Adjunct Lecturer or Adjunct Assistant Professor
     ii) The ranks will be based on the criteria noted below. Individuals ranked at Adjunct Associate Professor and Adjunct Professor will be nominated by the Graduate Chair for Membership in SGPS for a period equal to the adjunct appointment.
   • For Adjunct appointment renewal
     • Current adjunct faculty will be invited to inform the School of their intent to renew their Adjunct appointment and asked to provide a brief summary of their involvement with the School since their last appointment. This might include guest lecturing, precepting students, participating on a thesis committee, or other contributions. Adjunct faculty will be asked to seek of letter of nomination from a full-time faculty member at the School and include this information in their request for renewal.
3. In February of each year, the Appointments Committee will review submitted CVs to determine rank for renewals. The rank will take into account the appointee’s qualifications, experience, and achievements and will be guided by the following:

   Adjunct Clinical Professor	Minimum BScN	Guest lecturing Clinical consultation Appropriate in cases where responsibility within the academic unit relating to clinical activity, such as precepting, is ancillary to the appointee’s principal occupation (e.g., psychologist, dentist, physical therapist) may be nominated for consideration by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies* for status in thesis examination**
   Adjunct Research Professor (no independent research)	Minimum MScN or equivalent	Guest lecturing Research team membership Appropriate in cases where responsibilities within academic unit relating to research activity is ancillary to the appointee’s principal occupation or area of specialization. May include limited involvement in anticipated teaching/supervision in addition to the research component.
   Adjunct Research Professor (independent research required	Minimum MScN or equivalent and independent research track record	Guest lecturing Research team membership Appropriate in cases where responsibilities within academic unit relating to research activity is ancillary to the appointee’s principal occupation or area of specialization. May include limited involvement in anticipated teaching/supervision in addition to the research component.
   Adjunct Assistant Professor	Normally minimum PhD or the equivalent (e.g., in some instances an MScN or equivalent with a substantial teaching and professional practice record	Guest lecturing Precepting students Consulting as needed on Curriculum Development task group Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies appointment for thesis examination* plus thesis committees**
   Adjunct Associate Professor	MScN or equivalent with a research track record PhD or equivalent with a research track record	Guest lecturing Precepting students Consulting as needed on Curriculum Development Task Group Research team membership Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies appointment for thesis examination* plus thesis committees** Appropriate for someone more senior than Adjunct Assistant Professor and where activity is ancillary to the appointee’s principal occupation.
   Adjunct Professor	PhD or equivalent plus substantial research track record and recognized nationally and internationally	Guest lecturing Precepting students Consulting as needed on Curriculum Development Task Group Research team membership Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies appointment for thesis examination* plus thesis committees**
   Honorary Professor	Reserved generally for those who have attained academic or professional distinction in their field. Appointment as an Honorary Professor recognizes a mutually beneficial scholarly association between the University and the appointee.	An honorary appointment need not entail any teaching or other academic responsibilities on the part of the appointee An infrequently used shorter term appointment. Appropriate for someone who has attained academic or professional distinction in his/her field to recognize a mutually beneficial scholarly association between the University and the appointee.



4. Should an individual with an Adjunct Academic Appointment (AAA) become a student in one of the academic programs, the AAA will be discontinued to preclude role confusion and potential conflict of interest. Current students at Western are not eligible for Adjunct Academic Appointments. Once the student has concluded the program of studies, s/he may reapply for an AAA if and as appropriate.
5. The Appointments Committee will provide a list of nominees and their recommended ranks to the Director annually before March 31st.
6. he Director will send recommendations for Adjunct appointments and the accompanying ranks to the Dean, FHS.
7. Appointments will be effective on July 1st of the given year for a period of 3 years (for initial appointments) and 5 years (for renewals).
8. The Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing directory lists current staff, full-time faculty, and adjunct faculty along with hyperlinks to their Western email accounts. New adjunct appointees are asked to provide their clinical specialty/research interests for inclusion on this webpage.

Procedures for Adjunct Academic Appointments of Faculty at Western

Faculty members appointed under these Procedures for Adjunct Appointments are required to comply with the policies, rules and regulations of the University and to declare any real or potential conflict of interest. The policies and procedures shall apply to those individuals:

• Who have no other faculty appointment with the University other than outlined on this page
• Who ordinarily receive no remuneration from Western through this appointment, although in exceptional cases may receive a modest stipend
• Who are not, and will not be, eligible for Membership in the Bargaining Unit of The University of Western Ontario in the fiscal year(s) (May 1 to April 30) of the appointment

Notwithstanding the above, on occasion an individual appointed under this policy may hold a Limited-Duties appointment to teach at the University provided that the provisions of the Collective Agreement have been followed for that appointment.
