expertise:
Her research
focuses on fostering ethical practice in the context of violence
and inequity. She is particularly interested in how
racialization, gender, poverty and other inequities
co-constitute women’s health and health care, with particular
emphasis on violence against women. She recently completed a
study of the interacting risks of violence and HIV infection for
rural and Aboriginal women and a study of ethical practice in
nursing. She is currently the co-leader of a participatory study
regarding rural maternity care for Aboriginal women. She is
particularly interested in ethnographic and participatory
methods and anti-racist and ethical theory.
Position on team:
As the
co-PI for the BC site of this team, she is responsible for the
activities in BC and contributing to leadership of the over all
team. With Dr. Olena Hankivsky, she is co-leading investigation into
the economic impacts of violence against women. She is also
particularly interested in furthering understanding of a) the
relationships among violence, employment and the economic impact of
violence, b) child custody and access issues and c) the role of
substance abuse for women in the early years after leaving abusive
partners.
