Marilyn Ford-Gilboe, RN, PhD, is the T.R. Meighen Family Foundation Community Nursing Professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Ford-Gilboe’s research has focussed on understanding the strengths of families who may be deemed “vulnerable” in some way and how personal, social, economic and structural factors support or undermine their health. Much of this work has focussed on single mothers and their children, particularly those who have left abusive partners/fathers. She is particularly interested in impact of continued harassment on women’s health and their ability to care for themselves and their children as well as in developing health services that support women to managing the transition out of an abusive relationships and start a new life. She is the leader of the “Health Zone”, a demonstration project which seeks to improve the heath of vulnerable women and their children by improving their access to community-based health promotion services delivered by a Nurse Practitioner and Community Health Nurses  in collaboration with other community agencies. Women and their children, who are living in shelter and who have recently moved back into their communities, are taking part in this project.. She has extensive expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and her research has included studies that test and generate theory, analyse policy and test interventions. An experienced educator, she has taught courses in family and community health nursing, knowledge development and use, feminist research methodology and health promotion.

Position on the Team:

Marilyn Ford-Gilboe is the Team Leader of the Long-Term Health Effects of Woman Abuse Research Consortium and the Principal Investigator of the Women’s Health Effects Study. She is responsible for overseeing the work of the consortium as well as the activities undertaken at the Ontario site.
